I sailed past the back of John Wayne's home and John was out walking around his back yard. He looked over and I waved to John, he waved back. That was a treat lol

What a great man.Duke and Grizzly calling a cat had me in stitches.

Around 2008 a fellow western fan and I traveled to Tombstone, AZ. It was an anniversary of the shootout and was crowded with fans. We were hanging around the Main Street watching a fast draw exhibition when I noticed a great big, familiar looking guy sitting at a card table on the boardwalk in the shade. Very hot day. It was Gregg Palmer. He was alone for about 10 minutes and we talked with him like old friends. He told us about his friendship with John Wayne and other stories of his TV and movie days. Very nice, humble, regular kind of guy. Not really what I expected for a Hollywood character actor of his standing. I've seen him in hundreds of scenes.it was a thrill.

The best John Wayne I've ever heard. Sounds just like him without parody. RIP Greg Palmer, you were a great performer and without your particular style, those characters would have been bland. Mr. Word, I thank you for sharing this and others. I wish I'd known about these events before everyone was gone but the nostalgia you invoke by sharing these moments is poignant.

Thanks, Kyle. We will get back into production at the Autry. We just don't know when we will be able to resume production. There are still plenty more people I'd like to interview about their work in westerns. I hope you'll be able to attend.

You know John Wayne was like a ,' Father of America ' , he had that ( can't find the right word ) personality in him. See film Hatari. 55 yrs I've seen his movies. Last movie seen was The Shootist .atb.

he was an actor and entertainer. i love his movies but he only defended America in movies. Mel Brooks served in combat in Europe defusing land mines in front of advancing Allied troops. Lee Marvin was wounded fighting during the Battle of Saipan. Jimmy Stewart was a decorated bomber pilot who was a major motion picture star who quit Hollywood before Pearl Harbor to join the Army Air Corp. Stewart joined as an privater and retired as a brigadier general. Those actors defended America in combat.

These old Western actor/icons are great Americans and American treasures. God bless him.

Greg Palmer channels the Duke like no other and his recitation of John Mitchum's ,"America, Why I Love Her", really tugged at the heart strings. Well done Greg. Well done Rob.

I have said that so many times to Rob's interviews that I now just say "Another great interview Mr Word" ;

Ive said it before-every time I hear the words from that poem, it NEVER ceases to make my eyes very misty. Such beautiful words, no matter who recites it. Thanks for this Mr. Word and Mr. Palmer.

And So Sad, the other day I heard somewhere that these jerks are trying to discredit and get John Wayne's namesakes taken down. These people are out of control over their racists claims etc.

The kitty part was an absolute hoot. Loved this episode. They have renamed the airport in California. We need Duke today. I miss that man.

Oh wow!!! I love that poem n would definitely love to hear the Dukes voice telling it. I think I could sit all day n listen to Greg Palmer telling about his wonderful memories of way back then . He sounded so much like the Duke calling for his kitty kitty. This interview goes to the top.♥️♥️😊👍

The reading of the poem should be on tv the internet newspapers and in the news people need a reminder and the reading done by Duke should really help the true message.

It was great to see a 'typical cowboy bad guy' doing a wonderful impression of the best western hero ever born. Ive heard the poem before but never knew it was written by John Mitchum. Thanks for letting us see the real Greg Palmer!

What a stellar interview. To recite a poem without error, is something only a great actor can do.

I'm grateful that interviews with these great actors will allow their voices heard long after they're gone.

I never teared up at a poem but this tuff man was in tears. My God do we need some strong men with a Great love for our country to stand up and be heard right now. It makes me so sad to see our country right now and people complaining about everything not realizing how good we have it. God you for these videos

That story of The Duke calling his cat was hilarious. Made better by the amazing impression. Glad I watched this.

What a fantastic interview with Mr. Palmer! His face just lit up when he talked about Duke. And he also does one of the finest impersonation of Duke's voice that I've ever heard! It is a joy to watch this program. His "here, kitty" story had me in tears! Lol Thank you for the excellent work, sir, and keep 'em coming!

@@AWordonWesterns he loves the ones with the oldest characters. He was born in 1925 in deep poverty and the westerns were what he could watch and get away from the tough part of his life. He is a big fan of Bob Steele. He always said Roy Rogers kissed too many girls. :) but Bob Steele has his few. His all-time favorite interviews Rob are the interviews about Audie Murphy. He was Dad's hero. He grew up in poverty like dad and Dad wept when he died. But everything you do he really likes. If you ever do or have done something on the westerns in the 30s I would love to watch. Personally I am amazed at the riding done in these movies, the breakneck speed. If you do more on the actors that are great riders likes that too. Thanks so much for the question.

Wow Rob. An Awesome interview with Greg Palmer. I have to tell ya He bought a tear to my eye listening to him recite America Why I Love Her. Reminds me the first time I heard Duke do it. Course I didn't know he had done it until one Fourth of July It was in the middle of the collage of Music during the fireworks. I wish everyone would take a moment and listen to it today. Thanks for a great month of Duke interviews. Elden. PS I still love that piece you dubbed yourself into Mclintock.

One of my favourite episodes of "The Restless Gun" stars Gregg. I say stars, but he only appears in the last 5 mins but he does a great job. In many ways actors like Gregg - who played so many roles - are more part of my childhood than many big stars.

I liked Mr Palmer on the Gunsmoke episodes he was on. I would love to hear his memories of James Arness, Ken Curtis, Milburn Stone, Burt Reynolds, Amanda Blake...and all the great people he met doing Gunsmoke.....

All Americans should be so Patriotic. Miss The Duke Everyday.🇺🇸 Mr. Palmer sounds just like his Ole Friend, and the poem should be recorded and be a required study in every college NOW. To note, any professors who don't think it worthy, should be fired immediately, and if it up to me deported.🇺🇸

Strong stuff, I find it wonderful and kind of rare where America gets to be praised and you see a room full of people get behind the words while looking and feeling proud. And on Word on Westerns that's the way it is.

What a wonderful fellow. You know I’ve seen him in everything and in the early stuff he was skinny and playing the lead man types. He could be funny, charming and nasty in his roles which the ladder was his forte. I guess one of my favorite roles of his other that the dog killer in Big Jake, was the buffalo hunter on Gun Smoke. Really nasty fellow. My friend who conducted this interview did a top drawer job. He let the guest do 90 percent of the talking and that’s not always an easy thing to do. RIP Greg Palmer and thank you for your wonderful work. Sorry, but I just remembered his characters name in Big Jake--Fatty!

Great interview. I grew up watching just about every TV show at the beginning and most of the old western star's Mr. Palmer mentioned. John Wayne will always be my favorite.

One of his earliest roles I remember-was and WWII Tank officer in" Red Ball Express opposite Jeff Chandler. Since that time, I always liked him.

We have fallen so low now - the Republic is really in distress - we need a lot of heroes like John Wayne now

Met Gregg Palmer at the Memphis Film Festival in 2007. Interviewed and ate diner with him and some of the other actors there. Talked with him about the Creature film he did at Universal. He was a very nice man. Enjoy your programs very much.

What a joy your work must be! Thanks for keeping so many wonderful memories alive, and reviving some that almost slipped away! I love every video you produce!!!

I think the most important thing "Word on Westerns" does is bring forth these character actors we see over and over again without really knowing who they are. In a way they are the backbone of these westerns and other films.

As a kid, Gregg Palmer scared the hell out of me in Big Jake. Richard Boone was a tough guy, but "John Goodfellow" and his machete were scary.

That was great. We need some more loyalty to friends. Thanks Mr grizzly.
