Once the powers were used, they were entirely defensive at first and were obviously GL constructs. If they were gonna stop after seeing his symbol, then they should have stopped after this. Instead, they attacked him again, and that's when he created a weapon to fight back. This never even should have been a fight. MM is a telepath, and John is a civie in blue jeans that just gave a confused hello. There's a difference between being on guard against a potential threat and escalating to superpowered violence on sight. Stop pretending that the only two responses they could have is either completely relaxed or going full murderbobo. 😂

This shit is honestly so bad that I have seen some comics actively mock it. Saw a Simpsons/Futurama crossover comic where the Simpsons are fictional characters brought to life in the Futurama world and at one point they bring some Marvel and DC characters into the world (obscured enough to not get sued). The characters easily make the two fight each other with Bart explaining that super heroes will fight at the drop of a hat (coupled with Thor's helmet getting knocked off and him immediately going to attack the person). In a Spider-Girl comic (Spider-Girl being Peter Parker's daughter), Spider-Girl is in a fight with a hero before another Marvel hero, Nova, stops them and chastises them saying that heroes fighting for no reason is a thing of the past. In DC One Million, when Batman One Million (future Batman from the distant future) comes to the past to team up with Nightwing, the first thing he does is start attacking him. The reason he does this is because he assumes that heroes attacking each other is just a thing heroes in the present do to greet each other. Even Marvel and DC have mocked this at one point..yet it still happens.

Dang. And thought cops were trigger happy. Man pops up, confused, says hey and gets attacked.

When it's an actual villain, heroes always take their time and talk, so as to give them enough time to unleash whatever plan, or superweapon they've cooked up this time. When it's someone just standing there, that they don't immediately recognize, they leap into instant action!

Hal Jordan was the true Green Lantern until they suddenly decided that woke idiots needed to turn an established existing character gay. And the justification was that they claimed there had never been any gay characters before, but what about North Star from Alpha Flight. Any guesses why the character never achieved super stardom?
