    I'm becoming quite obsessed with this song. Which is nice as I'm a Somerset boy and it's a Somerset song.

    I think it was first published in 1905ish and I think it was east anglian, there are other versions from around the country, the longest being from yorkshire, course its a standard now

    @@spoonerbooner I'm fairly certain it was first published in Cecil Sharp's Songs of Somerset - which I believe in 1904. Even so, that's not necessarily proof it's a Somerset song (we have lots of hares. Not so many mountains). But it's good enough for me to call my own. Of course, the East Anglians can have it too, as they've also got hares and no mountains.
