I'm surprised no one asked when this was. I think in the 80s, crawling past passport control would be much easier than today

This is a salutary lesson to everyone - photocopy the last three pages of your passport before you travel as I’ve been doing for 50+ years. If you lose it, you can show the officials the copy and also photograph it with your phone as a second precaution.

Already 5000 views, even though posted only 5 hours ago. I wonder if there’s any others I haven’t seen before.
I'm surprised no one asked him what the plan was for the return trip, since he still wouldn't have the passport.

He was on the way OUT. Headed back home. It was his returning trip. Cor blimey.

He said on the way OUT of Brussels, which I assumed to mean returning home... Except that he was somehow dropped off by his wife at the airport. So was he living in Brussels? Otherwise this doesn't make sense.

John Simpson is a foreign correspondent. One of the locations where he served as correspondent was indeed Brussels.

This doesn't make sense as the next passport control would look for the entry/exit stamp even if his wife got his passport to him later.
