Steve Marsh talks to John Redfern of Bloomhill Lofts based at Moorends near Thorne in South Yorkshire. Bloomhill Lofts is situated in the semi rural village of Moorends, Doncaster, close to Thorne and Hatfield Moors and the Humberhead Peatlands. John Redfern is owner of one of the best team of Verheyen Hofkens racing pigeons anywhere in the world. In 1994 John introduced two pairs of Bert Braspennings Janssen pigeons to his racing lofts. These were very successful racing pigeons, winning many 1st prizes at Club and Fed level, also being the 5th Champion racing pigeon loft in Great Britain in the Vanrobaeys competition. In 2001, John introduced a very good hen of the Hofkens line from his good friends Jackson & Andrews of Howden, East Yorkshire. This hen bred his 3rd Open National winner from Tours, 438 miles, flying into a north west wind. John Redfern is a tremendous competitive flier at all levels, from Club, Fed and right up to National levels. His top class racing pigeons perform consistently well in all races again and again. John is a believer in flying with a small race team, training his team to be individual top performers through good and careful husbandry and stocksmanship.
