Lyrics:
All the snow has turned to water
Christmas days have come and gone
Broken toys and faded colors
Are all that's left to linger on
I hate graveyards and old pawn shops
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my childhood souvenirs
Memories they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years
To get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me
Broken hearts and dirty windows
Make life difficult to see
That's why last night and this mornin'
Always look the same to me
I hate reading old love letters
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my sweetheart's souvenirs
Memories they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years
To get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me

My mom passed away from Alzheimers a little while ago and I keep thinking of the line... "It took me years to get those souvenirs and I don't know how they slipped away from me." Thank you John.

I want this song played at my funeral because i can definitely relate to this John Prine classic! I've been at war with a life threatening illness for going on 26 years and I know the end is coming soon! I hate graveyards and old pawn shops to, they robbed me of my childhood souviners. RIP John, you were a great talent who left us way to soon! 🙏 Michael Allen Greer Uniontown, Pennslyvania

Forgiveness is a choice, and the greatest gift we can both give and receive. It's a souvenir that no one can rob you of, and one that goes with you when you leave this earth plain. This song is personally meaningful to me, and today I can say I'm grateful for the things that pawn shops and graveyards took from me, because those places led me to the most priceless souvenir anyone could ever hope to find.. Forgiveness. 🙏💎 💓

Beautifully written. It almost brought me to tears. I hate loss. I was born in the early 80's, I've been to too many funerals of my loved ones, family and friends, since I was a teen, more than I have been to concerts, weddings, and baby showers combined. Losing loved ones is hell, and caring for ones while their memory is fading from their mental grasp is a different kind of hell, too.

I met the love of my life when i was selling fire wood after i got laid off. While i was stacking the wood for this old man he was tuning up his guitar and his daughter asked if i liked music and if i had any requests. I said john prine, thinking they wouldn't know who i was talking about. They knew every damn one. We were together for 7 years and i just lost her to cancer. I miss you jayme and i will always love you.
