John Prine was an American treasure. If you get a chance, listen to his song Hello In There which is about the elderly and another heart breaker. BUT, he could also write really funny songs like Dear Abby, Illegal Smile, and Please Don't Bury Me. Thank you for sharing this one. 🙂

As a person in recovery since 7/11/08, this song amplifies the pain shame and degradation of addiction and it’s impact on the family system as well as the PTSD and moral injury inflicted on combat veterans. Prine paints such a vivid and sorrowful image in this tune. Very powerful.

So amazing to see someone discover John Prine. I'm a combat veteran and got out of the Army in 2022. It's difficult, but we have a lot more help now compared to then. I'm also a struggling alcoholic so this song always hits home. John was a long time family friend since before I was born. We saw him right before he passed. They way you two actually feel and hear, rather than just listen. You have a new subscriber.

I hope you find some peace and free yourself from the addiction. Alcohol may dull the low points in life, but it also dulls the joy in life, so you never truly appreciate the highs either, and the highs are what keeps everyone going.

In 1970’s elderly Grandmother was over time having her grandchildren (which there were many) each sing a song on her tape recorder. We did not all live nearby so this was her way to feel us near. I choose “Dear Abby” and buy she got a kick out of that, especially the verse sung about “Just Married” As far as that verse goes…if you know you know.

John's songs are all about the lyrics, but the music is solid. He wrote songs about people and life. Sadness and happiness. A great songwriter and a favorite of mine. Something on the lighter side is 'It's a Big Old Goofy World' ☮❤🎶

John Prine was a national treasure. He was a prolific song writer whose music touched many topics, songs that could make you cry, laugh and think about the human condition. I'd recommend "Hello In There" about how often the elderly are dismissed and ignored. Or "Paradise" about the devastating affect of coal mining. He could make you laugh with "In Spite of Ourselves" or "When I Get to Heaven". He survived neck cancer in 1998, but died from Covid19 in 2020. I saw him in concert many times over the years, and I'll miss him forever.

I have been a lifelong fan and cried like a baby when he passed away. Please react to more of his songs. Even Bob Dylan considers him one of the greatest songwriters ever.❤

We learn that it's a sad song so quickly, but when the chorus starts, "There's a hole in Daddy's arm..." and you realize the point of view .... the song is being sung by Sam Stone's child. "Little pitchers have big ears" is an old saying that means be careful what you say around the children, because they hear and understand more than you know. And the "kids run around wearing other people's clothes" - they are so poor they can only afford used clothing, maybe from a second-hand thrift shop. I think this song is about the tragedy of Sam Stone, but it's also about the collateral damage of drug addiction, and the toll it takes on the whole family.

His rabbit hole is deep and one you should explore. Check out Paradise, That’s the Way the World Goes Round, Lake Marie, Hello In There and In Spite of Ourselves to get a sampling of his genius. In this song he humanizes a suffering addict when in society our politicians were vilifying people instead of trying to help. Our culture suffered horribly by bad policy. John Prine is a national treasure here, we lost him to Covid 💔 He broke our hearts and made us laugh ,each fully and sincerely. For a laugh try -In Spite of Ourselves , or When I Get To Heaven. John Prine did serve in the army during the Vietnam War, but was lucky enough to spend it stationed in Germany, missing the battlefield entirely. Germany was a way station between Vietnam and America for troops headed both directions, so John had contact with returning soldiers and saw what battle did to them. This is what he drew from when he wrote "Sam Stone". There's another song about Vietnam veterans that might give you some insight into the experience of that war and the state of returning American veterans. The song is "Goodnight Saigon", written by Billy Joel. Billy did not serve, but many of his contemporaries did. One of them asked him to write a song to express their experience, and he did an incredible job. There is a refrain in the song that is witness to their brotherhood; when performed in concert, he asks vets to come to the stage to join the chorus that sings it. Please do a reaction to "Goodnight Saigon". Here is the best version of it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g56uzMqlXbTgpKg.html

Some things that might be hard to understand. Someone with an addiction is said to "have a monkey on their back" He said when grownups needed to watch what they were saying around children, one would say "little pitchers have big ears" For me the line about Jesus is about the fact that after 2,000 years there is still so much war and fighting in the world
