That entire story is just so amazing. Real and surreal at the same time. But mostly just real and vivid like the part about the girl falling asleep in his arms humming "louie, louie". American kids should have to take a John Prine class to graduate high school.

Just saw John for the second time tonight. I'm 28 years old. I went to the show with my 25 year old brother, 57 year old dad, and 77 year old grandmother. Grandma had never even heard of John until we told her we were taking her to see him a couple weeks ago. And she loved it. And I can now say I've seen a concert with my grandma. Thanks John. And dad for getting me into John. And thanks grandma for getting dad into music. And thanks me for thinking it'd be awesome to take grandma. Full circle!

My favorite John Prine tune out of many of his masterpieces. The Native Americans find two innocent babes not of their own kind and nurture them and name their lakes after them. Centuries later, modern society has turned that into a place where dogs were barking, cars were parking, loan sharks were sharking and narcs were narcing. What two bodies do we find? Naked bodies, faces horribly disfigured by some sharp object, their life blood turned into shadows. The singer's own love lost and slammed up on the banks of Lake Marie. Thank you John Prine for always writing songs that were about something specific but also about something vast and true. RIP

My 3 yr old daughter asks me all the time to "play peaceful waters Daddy" she recognizes it after two strums on the guitar every time it comes on. We started listening to it when she was a tiny baby and had a lot of trouble sleeping, but John would soothe here to sleep every time. I hope she hears this song when she's older and remembers it was her and daddy's song. Thank God for John Prine.

I love this live version. "Oh Baby, we gotta go now." I swear I fell in love with that man ages ago and he resided about 40 miles from me in Brentwood. At least one of his homes.and for.the time his kids were in school. A dear friend of mine whose an actual good guy attorney in it for helping others, most humble with great humility, well his daughter went.to same private school in Nashville/Brentwood and he'd see Mr. Prine every morning and they became friends. I was given opportunity to meet him and his lovely wife but was too star struck and enjoyed my obsession from afar. Plus I didn't want to ogle over them. I wish now I could have just sincerely expressed my adoration for him, his song writing, amazing sense of humor and thanked him for his blessings and how he has touched me for 25 years. Always take advantage of an opportunity like that. I'm devastated I couldn't express my compassion for his talent. There's never been anyone like him and will never be another Master Prine. His family is as humble and lovely as you can imagine. Why can't there be more musicians like John Prine? Then again if there were, it would take away his unique magic. Rest in peace and yes, I hope he's enjoying a cigarette 9 miles long. 😉 Lake Marie is one of the most heartfelt compositions and recordings. I'm grateful to have seen him at Bonnaroo during the early days of the fest under a tent with true fans. I never tried to get close. Just found a perfect spot away from my friends and met new friends listening soulfully to his immeasurable performance.

I discovered John Prine a singer song writer poet only recently and wonder now how i missed him in 65 years. What a discovery. All his songs have a deceptive simplicity with universal perennial age old themes that have relevance for us all at any age. He has a lot of humanity that does not exclude the listener nor promote the singer. And he's all the greater for that. Well done Mr Prine. You are a unique human soul out there for me. You give me hope and make me young again. Well as young as I'm ever going to feel. Cheers

As to the lyrics... it's rare when you hear a tune with random, story-like lyrics about people you don't know anything about, and you "get" the song at the emotional level where the facts are all different but you understand what he's talking about. This is a perfect song in that regard...

Still so sad about his passing. It's comforting to read all of the comments. Thanks everyone for sharing all of the memories and thoughts of John. I only discovered him when Tree of Forgiveness came out, but he quickly felt like a family member, long lost brother. I was lucky enough to see him once, brought my father and will never forget it.

It's hard for me to listen to this without it bringing tears to my eyes. I saw this exact tour and was sitting between two of my best friends, man that was something.... within 2years I lost both of them to suicide... it wasn't time for them to go , both were 53 years old and couldn't cope with the world and people changing around them. Don't let alcohol and pills destroy everything you put together your whole life, ask for help , I wish they would have asked me. This song is a haunting reminder to me of lost friends and good times spent with them by peaceful waters......

Sorry to hear about John's passing 4-7-20 early evening. His poetic resolve in his writing about real happenings in his life and how he sees life in general were a gift to everyone. I learned to play his songs from the first time I heard his tunes on the radio back in the early 70s. It was easy cords with strange picking patterns. Soon I learned he only played with two fingers, his forefinger and thumb. I am used to using 3 to 4 and still had a hard time getting his patterns worked out. Now, 40 years later, they come easy to me. so playing as many of his tunes as I can today. This one being one of my favorites.
