I have loved John Prine for at least 40 years. Got to see him live in a small concert in a small city close to me. It was like visiting with a friend who stopped by. I love your calm appreciation of this great artist.

My favorite John Prine song, also my favorite version. So nice to see him there with his son. No one could tell a story quite like John, the humor, the heartbreak, the sausages! His death hit me unexpectedly hard. The pandemic was already hard enough, but then, losing him too. I cried for days. Now, I can finally listen again and smile. RIP, John. By peaceful waters.

Nice to see someone get Prine-pilled in real time. He never got as famous as he should have, but he was the type of artist that if he meant anything to you, he meant a lot to you. The last decade or so of his life he was constantly being referenced by great songwriters like Jason Isbell, Bon Iver, Kacey Musgraves to name a few. To the point where he was making more money than he ever had previously because he was getting discovered by a new generation. He bought himself a Porsche that he couldn’t get in and out of. 😂 My request would be to pick any song of his at random and react. They’re all good.

Life and death and everything in between (tho, no, the naked bodies weren't them). The historic, the specific, the horrific, the personal, it all happened there. And him telling the beginning of their story as plainly as he could: "We were standing by peaceful waters" when it all began. The extended outro feels like the fullness of life washing over me.

Great song, and undoubtedly the best performance of it around. Thanks for this one! Very nice reaction. Did you catch the broken string on John's guitar at the end there?

This is certainly an amazing version of this song. The first time I heard it though was the one he performed on Elvis Costello's short lived (and incredible) series called Spectacle. That version is absolutely stunning.

I was born and raised in Chicago and me and my buddy's use to hang out in Twin Lakes Wisconsin alot in the late 60's and early 70's. Boating and drinking in the Summer and snowmobiling and drinking in the Winter. 😆

You're thinking of Brownsville Girl. John wrote Lake Marie long before Dylan and Sam Shephard wrote Brownsville Girl. But good comparison. But I don't think you should compare Prine to Dylan. Prine was his own self and I don't think borrowed from anybody.

The key to this song is it begins with an impossibility. Two babies could not have commucated with Indians who had never met a white person...so what is this song about? I can tell you it's deeper than the two lakes.
