I adopted the illegal smile this man put on my face thirty years ago, and never shook it. And for about twenty of those years I played the guitar-now I mostly just play Prine. Once I learned his Travis picking style I saw no need for anything else. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel his influence and presence in one way or another.

Almost 50 years ago, sitting around with my one of my brothers and two of my sisters in our teens; listening to albums from Cat Stevens, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, and John Prine...set the foundation for the man I grew up to be. Still deeply touched by his music. Today is the day before Easter...i find myself wishing Jesus would raise this man from the grave.

I don’t care how many years pass, it hasn’t become any easier. I cry with every article, interview, concert. Yet isn’t it so fantastic to ‘get’ enough stories to finally get the whole joke?! I still suspect there’s more, though. I was just considering that phenomenon & how I really just finally ‘got’ a couple of songs I’ve been listening to since the 70s. Right after I was watching House of Strombo & to my amazement he talks about just that! He talks about first holding & savoring a song like an exquisite secret ‘like I know something you don’t know’ while he enjoys a new song before he ever plays it for anyone. Then to my amazement he went on to explain how thrilled he is that as he continues telling stories about songs - that more & more of us start to get the punchline. Beautiful. ❤️

I really am enjoying watching the videos of John Prine. I was 18 in 1971 when his debut album was released. So many of those songs are amazing classics now. How does a guy so young write so many amazing songs before he's even signed a record contract. It's been a trying week since hearing the news of his death. A day doesn't go buy that I don't listen to a number of his songs, and find a few videos to listen to. I love his songs so much. His words are amazing. And I can't think of another musician who has moved me so much. Thank you for posting this video.

Sacking53 I agree with every word you wrote. In the midst of the craziness of confrontations facing our democracy, I fear it won't sustain. Then I head to youtube and find a John Prine video and I find he takes me to a place of calm. Love his ability to capture the essence of the human experiences with words and song. Golly, just what the doctor ordered for these trying times. Thank you, John.

After having listened to him since 1998(?) when I noticed that "Sam Stone" and "Flag Decal" were by the same guy (WtF?!? LOL), then slowly realized he never went away was still around and catching up with him over the next 15 or so years, I saw him in New Orleans at the Saenger in Dec 2016. What a magical night. While I am fucking pissed at he circumstances of his murder, I am so glad he went out on high notes....the triumph of the Tree of Forgiveness, being recognized by his peers with a lifetime achievement Grammy, press out the yang, and, posthumously, tributes from all of his fellow musical deities. All for my surrogate grandpa. You done good, John!

Also have lived John Prine since I first heard his music in 1975, when I was lucky enough to go to school by Chicago and back in the glorious folk music that was being created in and around Chicago back on those days. John Prine was the recognized king of tge folks scene, though he, of course, would have hated being singked out like that. Because besides being brilliant and kind, he was also truly humble and grateful for the opportunities he gained that let him share his wise, finny, heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking songs that we can continue to love and cherish, even as we keep saying to ourselves, I just can't believe he's really gone...

Sometimes when I have something in my eye and I can't get it out...I'll put on this storyteller of old or another and it'll only take a song or 2 before tears cleanse my eye. Works every time. Harry Chapin is a good one too.

One of the handful of times I was fortunate enough to have the see John play was around like 1990 when my wife, Michelle and I went to Chicago to see the Grateful Dead play one of the last shows of their summer tour at the Rosemont Horizon (now the Allstate Arena). Day after, looking for something to do, we see that John Prine is playing downtown at some dinner theater, Circa 21 Dinner Theater I think??? No tickets available for the two- night show so we leave my name and number of our hotel with this really nice box-office girl who happened to have been at the Dead show the night before... It was kind of a long shot waiting for tickets to materialize but the phone rang the afternoon before the show. It's he girl from the box office and she has some questions for me, like "where were you Saturday night" I said "Chicago"... What did you do? " Saw the Grateful Dead" - She apparently had other ticketless people hoping for a miracle ticket. She told us our tix would be at will-call and that we were "guests of John Prine"! and "Be sure to thank John and Al Bunetta***". It was a great show and we got to hang with John and give him some nice Iowa outdoor herbal from my backyard. Al Bunetta was a really nice guy and funny, in a gruff sort of way - I'm sure he was a great manager - John must have thought so because I think he was his manager up until he died in 2015. During the show we sat with John's doctor and his wife, who were also really interesting and friendly people. Wow - I hadn't thought about that trip for years. I had eaten like 1/2 gram of mushrooms at the Dead show and Michelle had somehow ingested 3.5 and we had ended up with a bunch of tour-heads sleeping all over our room. One of many memorable trips on the Grateful Dead's summer tour which was kind of a thing myself and most of my friends looked forward to every year. This year had the additional bonus of ending with seeing and smoking with one of the greatest songwriters and performers ever! We had been planning to see John play in St. Louis Born too late, died too soon... ***Al Bunetta: Check out billboard magazine article about Al Bunetta www.billboard.com/music/music-news/al-bunetta-longtime-manager-of-john-prine-dies-at-72-6509492/ I knew he was John's manager for years but didn't realize it was 40 plus years AND that Al was also co-founder of Oh Boy Records. And he was Steve Goodman's manager as well! Looking back, I didn't realize how fortunate I was to have been able to see all of these amazing people play. There are a few great ones left and a lot of amazing young people carrying on. Go see some live music!

I first found John Prine in a stack of albums while babysitting during high school. He was sitting on a haystack, and being a rock fan I don't know what drew me to him...but I've loved his songwriting ever since. I love his concerts, and got to see him in Raleigh, NC when he was already "ancient." Such a treasure!

One of the greatest songwriters ever , had a ticket for the show in Amsterdam and never got to see him. COVID took the show and him away. I love all kinds of music as long as the artist pours everything into it but I always thought that the most difficult was to write a simple universal song like him and people like Townes van Zandt and Bruce Springsteen and a few others could do. When the lyrics are so good if the music is complex it’s difficult to focus on the importance of what they’re really saying

I swear more ads have been added since the last time I viewed this. At least put them on between songs not in the middle. I'm not sure you can listen to one complete song without interruption. This medium is my soul means of maintaining some sanity in these awful times. My wife passed away April 10 and I have been alone since. Prisoners claim solitary confinement is cruel and unusual punishment, I now see why. We all need human contact, even if it is bad. I guess because after all we are all human, even though some humans ain't human. Thank you John, you figured that out decades before me. Stay safe everyone and have faith.

That’s the Conor that played #LandlockedBlues. I haven’t yet been able to follow #ConerOberst from #BrightEyes but there’s no mistaking that voice. I’m almost positive I heard him on am OST but the one I was pretty sure it’s from doesn’t list it & the 2nd choice doesn’t either. Perhaps it wasn’t credited on the OST but I know that’s where I heard it & why I’ve not yet been able to f/u. Good job & what an honor to have played WITH John Prine. How cool is that??! I see you’ve found success - I recall that song from SO long ago. You didn’t go unnoticed. ❤️
