John Pizzarelli - "The Way You Look Tonight (Solo)"
Музыка
Just two days after his Fretboard Journal Live interview (where he appeared and played alongside Bill Frisell), John Pizzarelli stopped by the FJ offices to perform one more tune, this gorgeous arrangement of "The Way You Look Tonight."
Pizzarelli is playing his Moll 7-string archtop through a Carr Sportsman. We recorded him via a single Ear Trumpet Edwina microphone.

That extra string really adds another texture of "I'm never going to fucking play this."

+mrrusss Yes true. I think the extra string is A. As i'm sure you know if John plays some dominant chord with its root in the fifth string he would move it to the seventh string. Like an E7 would be 7xx677x not x7677. Correct me if i'm wrong.

+N I'm not really sure, but just looking at it simply, yeah an octave below would make sense to me. Being able to play a note a fifth below any root normally played on the sixth string would also make sense.

+mrrusss It's still possible to play this on a six-string! Look at my channel and you'll see what I mean :D

It`s always a pleasure to be able to stop the life for a moment to listen to this generous master of guitar and just back to breathe when the song is over.
Quite incredible ,, John you're a master; chip off the old block; you keep the Pizzarelli flag flying high

WOW !! WTF !! usually watch Tommy, Joe or George at their prime and think "Man that guys a friggin Genius" but this rendition surely puts John up there with them Thanks John for such delightful education
Great playing from John as we would expect and I love that extra depth from the seventh string.

Genial, grande John Pizzarelli.
Amazing ❤️😍
So nice!
Lovely. Wondered why I was unable to Make sense of some fingerlings until I realised its a 7 string.
That guitar sounds really nice,... and the player also
Very very good!
Great ! :) Thanks John
One of my favorite pizzareli
We can say it was only a first shot ....like some exploration ....and a few years later JOHN added his voice on that even more stratospheric comp part , using classic nylon strings guitar for an outstanding fluent escape . ( réf . briusada . John PIZZARELLI . Just the way you look tonight . At Home ) .

Great Harmony Ideas!
Perfect👌
I hear a lot of George Van Eps there! :D Amazing
UNSTOPPABLE! John Pizarelli knows every trick in the book
I need to study this
That 7th string... whoot!!!
such a WONDERFUL arrangement wish could have the music sheet of it :)
Loved him since "after hours" "dear Mr. Cole" is simply a fantastic album.
mi piace..complimenti john!
well done John
Unbelievable!
Bravissimo!
This dude is legit. I'm buying a 7 string soon and I hope to be half as good as this guy
Wowwww 🌟🎸
WOW!
Great virtuoso, rich playing! ❤
I like the tone of that guy's guitar. Not talking about the playing but the sound of the guitar. He's a great player but I mean the tone. It's a lot of the strings being part of this. He's using LaBella flat wrap strings which give them an almost nylon string sound. Those strings suit his playing style well.

TO MUCH compression for me .That's not what i consider a great tone on an amplified archtop . I prefer a single acoustic without any effect .It looks here as John was using the octaver on a 102 POLYTONE of the 70's .

@Bennett TurtelThanks for the explanations and details you bring here . My comment at that time was quite clumsy . Don't misunderstand I do like and admire JOHN PIZZARELLI guitar playing and singing ....and Moll's archtop guitars are the acme lutherie and the tone with rich harmonics and absolute definition of each note into chords sequences is a must . May I admit I have some resistance to amps !
3:28 went into Think of One, one of my fave Monk tunes!
Go John P! When are you coming to Seattle ....?
I have a Jimmy Reed Twin Just like the one hanging in the first Minute of the song. Mine must be older it has a wooden Bridge.
Top player
I’d love some soloing ideas over those changes
I just bought a 16 string Guitar and when I opened the box there was an Octopus inside !
A seven string would thow me off! But I'd love to try it.

He makes the 7th string work-not a gimmicky thing.
I think he has said the bottom string is an A.

Can anyone tell me what's the chord when he places his middle finger on the low E string?
So..Pizzarelli huh....
I’m sure you’re capable of playing other styles of music but how do you get by just playing one?
Sounds like he still is learning the tune to me.

Really love this tune and John’s playing is unbelievable but, so many of these amazing guitarists over complicate their music to the point that it really stops sounding good and seems to turn into more of an exercise of just how much unbelievable finger work you can stuff into a song. Sadly in my humble opinion that is the case here. This would be so much better thinned out with more inflection than speed picking... I mean sometimes it’s actually hard to hear the actual song phrasing under all the thrashing.
BAD NEWS: 1) John has been practicing. 2) His stylist put him in pink pants. GOOD NEWS: 1) He's wearing glasses. 2) The new harmony on the bridge.
Bass Little out of tune but great arrangement and 7 strong has a nice texture.
Not really the point… but his outfit is great.
Don't like the sound of the bass string.. But the arrangement is yabadabadooh!!!!
Out of tuning. Terrible. :-/
