Noone can imagine how difficult playing was with these wooden rackets. Great skills by both players. Newcomb's serving strikes

21-year-old Edmondson looked like an average 40-year-old man in the 2020s

I didn't realize how beautiful a serve John Newcombe had. such an elegance and economy of motion. It's really just one movement with no lag or pause. looks like that's how he generated so much power. man was tennis elegant back in the day.

People questioning Australian open or tennis quality in general must remember we were the top nation for many decades yes things have changed but go and breed your own Laver Newcombe Rosewall etc...tennis is the game it is today because of Australia same as swimming ,cricket and many sports

Very interesting. I was following tennis at this time, and long before, and after, but somehow I had never seen this match. It was much misreported at the time: "Edmonson strong as a bull ..." etc. What I see here is (1) a guy with a pretty decent S/V game, with terrific 1st and 2nd serves, who started nailing BH passing shots in the 2nd set, and who throughout played with considerable calmness (apart from some loose volleys and rushing here and there), whereas Newk, although returning pretty brilliantly _a la_ Ken Rosewall, never the same shot twice, is missing far too many first serves, and getting beaten on the return of both 1st and 2nd serves far too often. But in general the standard of volleying, especially 1st volleys off the serve, is extraordinary from both players; and Newk's lobbing has to be seen to be believed.

Federer & Djokovic will be successful in any era. They are too good. Nadal might struggle on grass in those days but again he beat peak Federer in 2008 Wimbledon, so he might won slams on grass in any era but not so much. Similarly many of those past legends will struggle on today's condition.

One female commentator/ex-player pointed out when Edmonson was playing at Wimbledon in the early 80s that he looked like a blacksmith.

During those time Australian open was not seen as proper grand slam. It's looks like ATP 500 tournament where few top players were participated.

@@EJP286CRSKW how many times they participated in A.O in that time period?? 🤔🤔 Players like Connors, Borg just played 2 A.O in their whole career, Mcenroe didn't played there until 1983, Stan Smith just played 3 A.O in his whole career. Players like Rosewall, Newcombe & Sedgman were Australian so for them those titles are important but not for rest of the world.

@@rajusaha855 I am talking about the entries in _this_ tournament, and I have named several multiple Grand Slam winners. And I left out Mal Anderson. I can assure you all the Aussies regarded it as a proper slam. One of the reasons others didn't come is because the Aussies owned it.

@@EJP286CRSKW lol😂😂 during Connors, Mcenroe & Borg era Australia's tennis totally declined still those 3 hardly played there. Even in WTA tour Navratilova & Evert hardly played there in 70's. Of course Aussie will win if nobody plays there.

@@EJP286CRSKW in 1976 Australian open top 4 seeds were Rosewall, Newcombe, Roche & Stan Smith. Yeah they were big names but if you look closely Rosewall was well past his prime (aged 41) same with Smith & Roche. Even Newcombe was in a decline. So there was no Connors, Borg, Vilas, Orantes, Nastase & Ashe. That's pretty weak draw.
