JOHN NETTLES PRESENTS DEVON CPRE'S 'SAVE OUR FIELDS FROM SOLAR FARMS' CAMPAIGN.

Our small, independent Devon-based charity is fighting to stop the giant, international solar farm developers from ruining our countryside, taking out fields that are vital for sustainable food production and carbon storage. Please, donate to our Crowdfunder campaign to back our High Court challenge to overturn permission for this 164-acre solar development and create a war chest to fund future campaign actions:
www.crowdfunder.co.uk/devon-cpre
By helping us now, you will be helping to influence how councils elsewhere determine future applications for big solar developments that degrade valuable farmland. These applications are coming thick and fast across the UK and we believe there are far better places for miles of solar panels than on prime agricultural land.
Devon CPRE is enormously grateful to TV star John Nettles for spearheading our campaign against proposals for ever-larger solar farms that threaten to despoil Devon’s green and pleasant countryside. This video challenges ‘green’ claims that solar farms are low carbon and are a good use of agricultural land. They are not!
If solar farms are so good for converting sun to electricity to help solve a global issue, surely they should be sited in parts of the world where the sun is strongest, not on rainy Devon’s precious green farmland just for some to make a vast profit?
John Nettles lives near the village of Pyworthy in northwest Devon where residents, with our help, are fighting the development of a massive solar installation at Derril Water. Details of the planning decision can be found on the Torridge District Council website (reference 1/0249/2021/FULM).
This scheme and other current proposals throughout the county total around 1,000 acres of farmland that could soon disappear under black glass.
Help us keep Devon's fields green. Join us and join the campaign at www.cpredevon.org.uk/membership/

This is so true worldwide! Here in Michigan , USA, we have lots of rain and snow and get as cold as -30F in the winter near Detroit. Not suitable weather. And they put the solar panels on crop land, not marginal land. So the panels don’t produce electricity every day. There is not even the benefit of producing the panels in our country, but the panels come from China. I agree with you. Solar panels should go on factory roofs, house roofs, and the electricity produced should be available to the homeowners, factories, instead of the electric companies only.

Here in the states when there are huge unpopular projects like this , by the time they call for public input , they’ve already made up their minds to go ahead with the project. They have meetings to have the people urging them not to go ahead , the bureaucrats up front will pretend to listen , picking their noses , watch their phones ect. knowing they’ve already got a done deal! Money always talks louder than constituents.

As a woman who has grown up in the city of Elizabeth, NJ, with the Bayway Refinery perhaps within 2 miles of where I lived, I find that "Big Money" which finances the campaigns of our bureaucrats, interweaves them in support of these Mega Corporations. It will be a continuing struggle between these huge corporations and the little individual. In the meantime all life on this planet is struggling on this planet due to the effects of Climate Change.

People act like they are being forced to watch these shows! I spend my money supporting Durrell on Jersey Island. Been there three times to see what they are doing with my money.

Also ruining property value for the farmers. Please keep an update. Surely John will bring awareness to public for support. Midsummer Murders is a favorite of mine, seen them all more than once. Its happening in our neck of the woods in Southern Illinois, little Egypt tucked between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. We are battling to stop the destruction of good farmland with solar farms that are planted with tons of concrete. NO FARMS NO FOOD.

Food production in the US is so massive that we have tons of it for export. The price of the food is then so low that some small farmers cannot make a living. By decreasing supply using less land will increase the price and create a situation where the government need not supply subsidies to farmers to not produce and the small farmer can avoid selling the land to big agra businesses It is a win-win in the end for some of that unused farmland to be devoted to solar energy production. And I think it may also be true for England as well.

I hope Mr. Nettle’s campaign worked. What an amazing place to grow up. I’m afraid the truth of the matter is that farmers are no longer able to earn a living wage, and the younger generation doesn’t want to farm. We have fewer and fewer family owned farms in the US. The Agra. Companies seem to be buying every bit of land they can. I love watching Midsomer Murder reruns!

I'm on my third viewing of the entire 21 season series of Midsomer Murders. That said, I'm delighted to see John Nettles doing his part, not as the fictional Chief Detective Inspector, but as an advocate to block, if at all possible, the installation of ever more inefficient solar panels on Devon's countryside. The series, which always took pains to portray the land and villages at their most beautiful was, and remains, a good part of its charm. To damage and degrade such land, for the sake of no real long term energy benefit, not to mention solars renowned lack of reliability, borders on the criminal. Best of luck in your efforts to stop it expansion.

As a trained ecologist I can appreciate the objections to this . Funnily enough, I think John Nettles USED to live near Stratford upon Avon as I do, and there is a similar ‘ solar farm ‘ on pasture land near here, though on a smaller scale to the Devon one. Sadly one of the objections seemed to be about the weather and rain with the comment ‘ it should be sited further south ‘. Where then exactly? - Devon is as far south as you can get in the UK ! But the despoliation of the landscape in an area of high tourism and more to the point the toxicity of the products making up the solar panels are totally valid as objections. The bottom line is, we should ALL use less electricity, and as the old cliche says ‘ Live simply that others may simply live ‘.

As we attempt to change to clean energy, we must not cut our noses off to spite our face. Good, clean energy, but at 8 billion & counting, we will need to focus 80 percent of our attention to food: seeding; harvesting, preping, making other foods, transport of food, etc. Use deserts for solar farms like here in Nevada (home of Las Vegas) USA but 80 percent of our state can't be farmed, its desert basically, so lets get the farms where they do the most good & leave good food producing soil intact.

They should put these in ugly parts of the U.K., parts that have long been ruined. Put them on the tops of flat roof tower blocks in London, put them in city parks as its cities that use the most energy, put them in airport fields. I grew up and lived in Devon until 1999 when I moved to Canada and now live in Austria. Devon is a very special landscape who’s major industry is tourism, people trying to reconnect with natural beauty, put these things in and that natural beauty is gone and with it Devon’s largest industry, after all, who wants to drive around fields of black glass!
