For piety, go to the Bible. For feelings, have a copy of PL and PR by your side. Read PL and PR with your heart, your body, your tongue, your mouth, your ears, your eyes, and feel how his use of words, his syntax, his vision and insight, his style, can lift you much more than mere music does.

I found out I’m a descendant of this man (I’m an Australian)…. This world is a strange place… lol When my uncle informed me, I researched and straight away I thought I wonder how he would feel looking at my weird art in a modern time. Very odd this eye sight tho …. As I’m. A visual artist

I have read the Iliad and the Odyssey, and four books of the Aeneid. I intend to read at least parts of the Divine Comedy. But I cannot stomach Paradise Lost. It's like going back to Sunday school. Laying aside his eloquence, Milton was first to last a true believer. He spent a good deal of his life as a pamphleteer and to me, Paradise Lost is nothing more than elevated pamphleteering. Ugh. I know he is revered as an equal to Shakespeare, but I can't stomach it. Sorry.

I certainly understand where you are coming from. However, his views were actually very heterodoxical and controversial even today (not to mention at the time). I'd suggest reading the recent biography 'Poet of Revolution' which puts his pamphleteering in context. He wanted to establish a continuity with the great orators of the past such as Cicero and develop the skills to create poetry that was politically engaged yet still with a transcendent power, much like Dante. Although he can be initially difficult, I would suggest continuing as the reward is almost without parallel in English literature. Best regards.
