John Mearsheimer: How powerful is the Israel lobby?

Ойын-сауық

We are joined by Professor John Mearsheimer, one of the world’s most influential political scientists. He is the Wendell Harris Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, where he has taught since 1982.
Professor Mearsheimer has written and lectured extensively about security issues and international politics. He’s the author of six books including The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy (with Stephen M. Walt), which made The New York Times best seller list and has been translated into 24 languages.
He’s been an outspoken critic of Israel’s genocide.
"I do not believe that anything I say about what is happening in Gaza will affect Israeli or American policy in that conflict," Mearsheimer wrote in December.
"But I want to be on record so that when historians look back on this moral calamity, they will see that some Americans were on the right side of history."
Nora Barrows-Friedman, Asa Winstanley, Ali Abunimah and Jon Elmer of The Electronic Intifada were joined by Abubaker Abed, our contributor from Gaza; John Mearsheimer, one of the world’s most influential political scientists, on the day 145 livestream. We've been support ing Israel to our detriment since it's inception. Do you know what the first thing Colin Powell told GW Bush after the terror attacks on 9/11? He told Bush that we need a two-state solution in Palestine. Why? Bc he was well aware of the blowback that our support for Israel causes. And Bin Laden said as much in his letter to America (among other things, ofc.) Now, you don't have to take Bin Laden's word for it as he isn't a reliable narrator, I get that. But Colin Powell was a smart man. He may have lied us into the subsequent invasions, but he knew that the core of hatred for the US stems from a.) our foreign policy in middle east and b.) Our support for Israel, which is WHY we have pursued such foreign policy. Netanyahu, for decades, has wanted the US to take out Iraq. And Syria. And Libya (I think, don't quote me on that one.) And Iran. He testified in front of Congress urging the US to overthrow these countries. And guess what? We've done 3 of the 4 (or tried to in Syria.) Only a matter of time before Israel gets us into WW3 with Iran. They will invade Lebanon after Rafah, imo, and it's off to the races after that, as the entangling alliances in the Middle East join forces to stop Israel and the West

He referred to backlash to invasion and occupation as "nationalism", first time i thought it was poor wording but he doubled down. No, that is just resistance and anti-imperialism, it's just a constant reality that's why it manifests as what he calls "nationlism" (something I would describe the MAGA movement as, not teenagers in flip flops in an open-air prison)

Thank you John Mearsheimer and Electronic Intifada for this wonderful exchange. Interesting how citizens, governments and lobbyists interact between each other and the strategies towards garnering or thwarting control. Something also very interesting today was the explanation how Morale compass (logic) and Strategic logic affect how governments (and citizens) make decisions. Where realist decisions are often disappointing because they cross our lines of morality. Anyway, your online productions I find very to be very open, frank and educational and for me adding more and more puzzles pieces getting me closer to seeing what is before me. What a pleasure to participate in discussions without all the the sensationalism!

I am curious until the US send 3.8 bn to Israel annually and Israel sends back a few hundred millions to buy up politicians the power of the lobby can be broken? Also until organizations are allowed to provide any funds, not to mention millions to politicians it can not be thwarted. Maybe there is a need to limit donations only to natural private persons and even that should be limited to say, 500 or 1,000 dollars by one person.

Steven Gowans, Noam Chomsky, Richard Becker and others make a good critique of Mearsheimer’s book in that it posits that the tail wags the dog - that US policy is dictated by the Israeli lobby, not that Israel itself is an outpost of Western geopolitical influence headed by America’s corporate ruling class in the form of Wall Street, the Pentagon, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

It's not a very cogent critique since why would the lobby need to be as big and well funded as it is if Israel itself is a bastion of American imperial interests. Why would it need to involve itself in so many local and state elections? Why would the lobby police social media, college campuses, media organizations and protesters to suppress people expressing the reality of Israeli oppression? I think this critique is based on an apprehension about Jews being seen to 'control' others.

The World is ruled by Christians and Muslims, and it is these two groups that fight for dominance, Israel is a knife aimed at the heart of the Muslim world, and it also functions as a way to get Jews to voluntarily deport themselves from the Christian World. The Jews have the most to lose as if the Christians stop supporting them they stand at high risk of being holocausted by the Muslims, and Christians want to keep the voter supporting the war on Islam despite this war bankrupting the Western nations and citizens.

I think there is a way to reframe Realist Logic to align with Moral Logic. Realist Logic almost always focuses on subjugation to maintain power, but it doesn’t have to. One could very easily make a case that making lives tangibly substantially better creates stability. Instead of military might, we should be focusing on genuine compassion. We should be helping to rebuild places we’ve destroyed, but also going beyond that to share scientific research, provide sustainable technology solutions, as well as food and medical aid. If we provided these things to the general populace of the world and stopped our oppression the logical outcome is that we would see less aggression against us, achieving the goal of stability. This is also a Realist viewpoint that the establishment just never even considers.

The image of the US would be greatly enhanced if they were to genuinely bring improvements to the lives of people in the global south instead of military subjugation and oppression of an already impoverished populace. A case in point is Afghanistan. If they had spent only 10% of the money spent over 20 years, on infrastructure, schools, hospitals etc, the Afghani people would have rejected the Taliban
