    John is, quite simply, a master musician, who over the course of fifty-years has gifted the world with his incredible musicianship and amazing compositions. Miles Davis doesn’t name a track after you for no reason.

    We are lucky to live at the same time... he is personally responsible for entire genres... a modern Bach or Beethoven... a gift from the heavens.

    I saw him many times with his band and with Santana and j. Ponte .He is one of the greatest jazz guitarists of the past and present. Thanks Mack Cornell 78

    1st gotta pay homage to John McLaughlin. Inventor of scallop fretboard. Next was Richie Blackmore. Still going at 80. True legend. I invented / patented the 1st vertical scallop fretboard. New strings bends / vibrato / pulloffs. Love to share it with JM sometime. Great post 🎸🎶

    I saw JML live circa 1992. The "synth" you are hearing is generated by the guitar.

    Jimmy Page once said that John is the best guitarist in the world. Page was a phenomenal player too. He trained under John.

    @@cirenosnor5768 He really did. Look it up! Jimmy Page actually once stated that John McLaughlin was the best guitarist in the world. Behind the scene, Page was a Larry Carlton. He could play jazz perfectly, but he played a certain way for the Led Zeppelin image. He wan'ted people to view him as being a rough edge rock guitarist. Because that was his image in Led Zeppelin.

    @Talking2musicians I don't think Santana influenced Schon that much. He was a mentor. But Schon is different to most players. He likes to play high up the neck and phrases his solos so well. He's better than he gets credit for.

    Its like a car in the fast lane, wow what was that,must be in a hurry.The guitar work by Steve Howe and sounds like Layla and while my guitar gentle weeps appeals to me more,having said that my knowledge

    People who say John McLaughlin needs to play "slower" and "with more feel" simply do not get it. Besides, his playing is extremely original and not a set of stock clichéd licks.

    I personally dont like the acoustic playing, maybe the recording, but its to many notes, i prefer his electric playing in the Mahavishnu days by far.

    He's fast,but NOT Yngwie Malmsteen fast.On both electric and acoustic(classical).Malmsteen is a freak of nature!

    I don’t see any point in your statement. YM plays the same style lines over & over, over pretty much power chords. You’re trying to compare him to a man who plays over complex harmonic chords in several different genres.

    Yes, he can play incredibly quickly, like a video sped up, but so what ? Speed is not important. Feeling, spirituality, soulfulness are important, not speed.

    Ravi Shankar, like John McLaughlin, had incredible speed, and like McLaughlin feeling, spirituality and soul. Speed is just one piece of the puzzle, but when a master has all those pieces the result is awesome.

    @@Talking2musicians Musicians who are extremely dexterous know if they play incredibly quickly their audience will be dazzled .. so this is what they do, to impress .. like a circus juggler keeping ten balls in the air at once ... All to cause people to gasp .. to go "wow" ... I don't like this. It is shallow. People need to be taken to beautiful worlds, not dazzled.

    @@tjcint There are indeed players who use speed and flash to "wow" the audience. However, none of the musicians I've interviewed fall into that generalization. I have a video on this channel of John McLaughlin playing the music of Bill Evans, it's perfect for anyone who wants to be taken to beautiful worlds. I stick by my first answer, but respect your right to disagree.
