I think it’s also important to remember how small the head size was for both Mac’s and Connors racquets!
Awesome Mac! I could watch hours and hours of this...
Beautiful to watch, such great hands. 84 was awesome. 👍
When I was a kid playing tennis, Stan Smith was my hero. When Mac came along, he was something different. Serve and volleyers used to hit the first volley from just inside the T, and just look to get it back low and deep. Mac was hitting first volleys well inside the T and putting them away. It was a new game.
Glad that 1984 is still the greatest year in open era men's tennis

Agreed. Mac lost only two matches in tournament play the entire year. An additional match was lost in Davis cup. A record that will never be broken IMO.
Incredible. He made it look so easy, and yet, a tennis player knows how hard it is to get in there and be able to cover so many possibilities. Of course this only shows the successful ventures into the net, but he had to play the odds, he figured he could win more often on his serve by coming in. But still it is very demanding physically.
No one has the ability or the balls to play like this anymore. Sadly. Our loss.

For modern tennis I always like to watch cressy. He's one of if not the last relevant true serve and volleyer in the pro circuit. I wish him well and hope he breaks into top 50

I was thinking McEnroe could still possibly claim the “best overall tennis player” Title because of his incredible success in doubles as well

The most unique and beautiful artistic game I’ve ever seen in my 40 plus years of watching tennis. I saw him play edberg semis Wimbledon it was such a treat
@erikrichardgregory
@@bellazoe1 I remember that game…Edberg and Mac won a virtually identical number of points, but Edberg got the bigger points and pulled off a 3-straight-set win. I was pulling for Big Mac but later in his career, particularly against Lendl, it looked like a “heavyweight vs. lightweight” mismatch-McEnroe had the rapier, but Lendl the broadsword. It was a hard adjustment for Mac to come back in the second half of the 80s against these big hitters and servers.
@bellazoe1

@@erikrichardgregory well summarized. It was 4-4-4 not a dramatic match at all but mac was still relevant and just to see the artistry was all I cared about. Edberg was quite something too
John McEnroe at his absolute best in 1984 would be the #1 ranked player in the world in today's tennis if they were to (1) speed up the court surfaces to the way they were in 1984 (2) ban the lubricated, copolyestor strings (which add 20% more spin to the ball), (3) ban the larger Type3 tennis ball which, along with the lubricated strings, irrefutably cheapen the game of tennis by making it too damned easy to avoid making unforced errors and regrettably favor baseline play over net play, and (4) downsize the rackets by instituting a rule limiting the dimensions of the racket to no longer than 27 inches in length, no wider than 18 mm. wide above the racket handle and no larger in head-size than 75 square inches! Tennis desperately needs to restore the balance between offense and defense that it once had by making those necessary changes suggested above in order to bring back a great diversity of playing styles which the current game so obviously lacks!

Well said. They should have looked at at all of those things especially when Rafa started dominating with a full poly rocket launcher. Utter joke

@michaelbarlow6610

@@MH117 . Actually wood and metal rackets (with the obvious exceptions of midsize and oversize wood and metal rackets such as the Wilson Jack Kramer Autograph Jr. Midsize, the Donnay Borg Pro Midsize , the Wilson TX6000 Midsize and the Prince Woodie Oversize) were anywhere from 65-70 square inches in head size. The Wilson T2000 steel racket had a 65 square-inch head, but the Snauwaert Gerulaitis Autograph racket had a head size slightly smaller than 70 square inches. I merely believe that an upper limit of 75 square inches in head size, 27 inches in maximum overall length and a maximum of 18 mm. in width above the racket handle should be mandated by the ITF (International Tennis Federation) for tennis rackets for professional players in order to bring back (along with a ban on lubricated strings, a ban on the larger Type3 tennis ball, speeding up the court surfaces as well as bringing back the fast indoor supreme court carpet surface for indoor tournaments) a diversity of playing styles to the game of tennis to restore a much needed balance to the game in order to make it a compelling spectacle once again.
The greatest.

No love....no communication....just.........................devastating....
I'm going to say john mcenroe was the greatest serve and volleyer that ever lived. Especially since there aren't any playing anymore so he won't be beaten.
Quel merveilleux joueur
1984 was def. Mac's year!
Incredible hands
The other guys played tennis, this guy played something else
Wow! In this video, McEnroe really knows how to win every point.
mc-enroe 1983, 1984 was a different tennis world and that with this heavy little tennis racket
Mac could basically play tennis in his sleep! \The volleys that he hits are incredibly difficult and complicated shots, and he does it as if he's not even trying! Amazing.
Great athletic talent!
No one passes McEnroe...no one...

At least not that year 1984
Fwiw, i think that this match is massively overlooked historically given how many great matches were played that day. You can argue that this was the highest quality tennis match ever played up to this point. I say this over any of the borg/mcenroe matches only because they are both using graphite rackets in this ‘84 match. Also, mac beat connors 1/1/2 in the wimbledown final that year, and forced connors to switch to graphite and it showed in how well he played. Also, given the fact that ‘84 was by far the best level of mac’s career, and he want out 15 hrs after this match and destroyed lendl in straight sets, speaks to how high quality the tennis was
This was Mac's best year!
Merci! Also: Did Tacchini pay Bic or did Bic pay Tacchini? That is the question. They both paid Mac LOL.
Connors was still great.
Press pause when his ball is up in the air - and try to guess where and how he is going to hit his serve: nearly impossible to tell. Maybe the best serve&volley player of all time. At least the most fun to watch for me, personally. So bad courts have been slowed down through the years, now too much baselinegame.
2.51 un parfum d’humiliation pour Connors, well donne John
