Dan D dude those guys are killer, but if you say mayer has nothing special, you really dont understand guitar. Neon and stop this train is really hard at guitar, and he play those songs while singing, and yet he is one of the guitarist who makes complex riff sounded so simple, it is so hard to do.

Agree!! And Mr. Eric Clapton loves doing covers. He talks about John a lot and likes him. He plays with him, among others, and there's lots of others. So if U think John is a teen idol, U might want to listen to an unprecedented , 3 time, inductee into the RRHoF, a man who's played with everybody , no attitude , living legend/icon , who not only plays and has played with too many greats to mention, is the best guitarist , barr none, of the 20th & 21st century , and hear what he has to say about John . Don't compare anyone to Jimi or SRV, cause their not here. And it doesn't really matter how they would have turned out if they lived, cause they were pretty awesome exactly how they were. With my musicality, before I will ever take a step forward , I dig deeper right where I'm at. If u realize that there r only 12 sounds in all of western music, and you can internalize them (u probably have them stored in ur sub- conscious brain along with so many other songs, melodies, harmonies that go all the way back to when u first heard music, child songs, nursery rhymes , all generes), any exercise u do becomes that much more powerful. Even singing the sounds after playing them ,to get familiar with them, is internalizing ! And u want to internalize them to improvise (friends,2-3 people, jams , open mic) , so if u walk into a setting where's there's jamming happening, and somebody runs up to u and says "ok, here's the key and here's the chord progression ", and u say , "forget all that. Just let me listen for a minute and I'll follow u." U listen and then u play 1 sound and you'll know exactly where your at and the key and the chord progressions. Me ,I do that but I'll improvise . And that's where the fun is and that's what musicality is all about. Music theory is redundant . Play scales isn't improvising . Play some (which all come from the 12 sounds in western music)at 250 bps might impress ur friends, but it'll do nothing for ur improvising . The concept is how slow u can play each sound , then improvise with them and that will give all the info u need to play in any situations . You'll eventually forget about keys, and progressions and you'll always know where ur at, always! If you've ever been on a plane and u walk thru and ur greeted by the flight attendants and then u glance into the cockpit and look at the dashboard , u probably thought,"there's got to be a zillion buttons on there, how's the pilot know what buttons to push!!!!", Cause he knows what they do.........

People love to forget that musicians are people. They have songs they love to hear and love to play. Somehow people who don't like John's version believe they're entitled to decide what he does and doesn't get to play. Okay, so I guess next time you decide you'd like to play some Hendrix in your bedroom by yourself, I should come in and say, "actually, ur not allowed. It doesn't do Hendrix justice and it just sounds bad. Sorry." Like seriously lol. John LOVED SRV and Jimi. Those were influences. He's not covering them to impress people, he's covering them because he fucking loves playing their songs. Stop thinking you're allowed to decide how people express themselves through music.

The way it feels like they are just trying their hardest to fit as many complex blues licks they can in between every motif feels more like a game than simply playing an instrument. Musical cramming. Abenezer Manaye John Mayer's Stratocasters have the modern tremolo block system installed, the new blocks are bigger and hold the strings more stable so those old whammy bar tuning nightmares are pretty much a thing of the past.. Even with a modern Floyd Rose tremolo system eventually you'll have to retune..
