Have some fun playing over this cool John Mayer style backing track which is written in the key of C#m or E major. As the tune starts on A major, rather than the root key of C# or E, you could even say this was an A Lydian backing track...
As for what to play over the top, well the C#minor pentatonic and C#m scale will be the ideal choices. You can also use the arpeggios of the chords in the song if you want to change with the chords. Have fun and keep jamming!

C#m is my favorite.
What would an interesting chorus or bridge progression be with this? I struggle with that a lot. I come up with a nice verse progression but then don’t know where to take it.
@GraysonKade
4 жыл бұрын
A lot of great bridges maintain a pretty similar chord structure to the verses/choruses. You may switch some chords around like instead of going from A to bm to G# maybe start on bm then go to G# and back to A. But the main thing I think makes great bridges is just the dynamics and the feel used. Some great bridges are the exact same chords but played with build-ups, finger picked, etc. Just experiment.

One tip that use often is enter a birdge on the relative major & vice versa. In this case it’s a HUGE Open E that you can smash out. Will completely change the tone of the progression while staying in the same key✌️
Nice one

Agree. Did you try it in the relative E major? If you did you think it sounded good- trying to decide which I like better. Mostly the same notes +2 gives it a different flavor. I might lean towards just C#m. Sometimes less is more. This progression is deceptively simple yet nice. JM really likes his C#m7.
@funkymonkey8174
3 жыл бұрын
@@UTAH100 I have played it in E major. I tend to stick to C#M with this particular track. Other tracks in the same key have a different feel not sure how to put into words that E major really lends itself to. I play it pretty clean on this one too, just a touch of compression and a little reverb.
@UTAH100
3 жыл бұрын
@@funkymonkey8174 I know exactly what you mean. There is theory, chord progressions and then simply just feel. I'll go with feel all day long.
Wow, amazing work! The only downside for me is I usually solo with this same clean tone so it clashes with the track, but that's me not understanding the use of overdrive I guess. 😂
Still fun to play no matter the complaints in the comments!!!

What’s your recording set up like?
More like E major, relative C# minor. The tone and phrasing are all in E major
@yga
6 жыл бұрын
Yes well spotted! It definitely has a major feel all round and others have commented that in theory it could even be considered Lydian as the opening chord is A, but the chords are based on the E major scale.
@user-oy7gz5bf2h
5 жыл бұрын
It feels very minor to me. Unless you are referring to minor as being harmonic minor, as classically trained musicians might. To me, A is the 6th chord of the tonic C#m. I know some would call it the 4 chord as it stems from E ionian, but that's not how I was taught nor how I see it. Regardless, I hear minor (aeolian).
@sweathe3819
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for clearing that up. The notes fit much better in E major.
@marcusatmercy
5 жыл бұрын
it's C# Minor--that's the tonal center. not A Lydian. E major is C# minor but C# minor is the TONAL CENTER.
@davidferrara1105
4 жыл бұрын
@@marcusatmercy In the absence of a V-i cadence, it still sounds like C# minor to me....It does have the Aeolian minor five chords in the G# minor. No way in hell is it Lydian; that's just a little knowledge being dangerous...
Grab you guitar ! Put A little reberbe, A nice and clean gain. A little improvisation in C#M Pentatonic / E Major Scale. And it sounds soulful ! I love this backing track !

so i can do a minor pentatonic scale starting on ca sharp and a harmonic minor scale starting on c?
@JonathanPiston
6 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. As all Major scale also known as Ionian Mode has a Minor related to it. C Major Scale = AM Pentatonic Scale D Major Scale = BM Pentatonic Scale E Major Scale = C#M Pentatonic Scale F Major Scale = DM Pentatonic Scale G Major Scale = EM Pentatonic Scale A Major Scale = F#M Pentatonic Scale B Major Scale = G#M Pentatonic Scale So As the song is it C#M. Either you improvise in E Major Scale or C#M Pentatonic Scale

Loved the track! Excited to explore the rest of the resources here. I do have a question, though: as a bassist, I naturally played with the backing track, not soloing over it. I started playing an A major scale mostly following the chord changes and locking with the drums, but making it as minimal as possible so it wouldn’t sound too busy. I started with an A major scale, but A Lydian also worked well - perhaps better. Can you tell the reason why? A major and A Lydian both cover the chord roots (A, B, C#, G#), being the only difference the 4th (either a D or a D#). Is there a reason why you mentioned A Lydian instead of A major? Thanks!
@sindenmusic3534
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gabriel, The poster actually explains this in the description. The chords follow the key of E Major or C# minor. They are relative to each other because their notes are the same - much like the A lydian scale. Since the chord progression starts on A and resolves on C# it makes more sense (theoretically) to play your leads over the C# minor key. You've even said it yourself - the difference is a D# versus a D natural. The way that I look at it is with the full chords. You mentioned you're a bassist so root notes will only take you so far when it comes to "modal" progressions. Here are the notes in the chords: A Major - A C# E B Major - B D# F# G#m7 - G# B D# F# C#m7 - C# E G# B Looking through the notes there - you see there are two chords that share the D#. That is why this song would be considered A Lydian. TECHNICALLY you could play A Major over the A Major Chord and the C#m7 Chord but once the B and G#m7 are rung - that D natural will sound awful and out of place. Best to stick to arpeggios or maybe pentatonics in that case.
@yga

Exactly!! Thanks guys 😀😀😀🙏🏻

Thanks a lot for your clarification, Andrew! As a beginner I do tend to stick to pentatonics, arpeggios or at least roots and fifths when in doubt, but I'm really interested in understanding these aspects to be able to push things forward a bit. Your explanation, along with the original post, definitely help me learn 🙂

Hi there! Yes, please send us the details to contact@yourguitaracademy.com 🙏🙏🤘
❤🎸
It refers to the classic 1, 3,4,1 progression made famous in songs like fooled around and fell in love and the weight. It is in fact a sort of turnaround that's very useful in those sorts of songs. The turnaround usually terminates in a cm7-B-Am a couple times before returning to the 1-3-4-1.
Can I feature this in an Instagram visual/musical video I make? I'll credit you of course.
