There's no denying that John Mayer is a very talented guitar player and song writer. You've already said that he could be a session guitarist, so at least you acknowledge his guitar playing ability. I'll ask you to listen to his albums Contiuum, Battle Studies, and Born and Raised. The lyrics in those albums have meaning to his life and his attitudes. He can play guitar extremely well and he is a fantastic singer. You may not like his music, but you cannot deny that he is talented.

i agree he uses alot of older artists things, and he uses some interesting chords sometimes but does do alot of common ones.

@andy18401 John Mayer has 4 major albums out (not including his live stuff): Room For Squares, Heavier Things, Try! (JM Trio), and Continuum. John wrote all of the songs on these albums excluding No Such Thing and Neon. In No Such Thing, the only thing he didn't write was the Bridge. John also wrote the majority of Neon himself. The man he co-wrote the songs with was Clay Cook, whom John played with in a band at the time these songs were written..

@lsdman14 I definitely understand that the video is sarcastic lol. I don't think you can compare Morrison and Mayer though. They were two totally different artists. Morrison was a poet, so he wasn't really trying to write thing that related to people. He was writing stuff that was way more introspective and metaphoric than what Mayer writes. I agree with you though, they are both amazing at what they do.
