Everyone saying "Not as good as the original", do you seriously think an artist has that goal in mind? You cover a song because it has meaning to you or has touched you in some way, shape or form. I'm sure John himself would say this isn't near as good. That's not the point. It's his interpretation. A cover of a song he also loves like all of you. Listen and enjoy. Stop comparing every damn thing.

This is one of john’s best studio performances and it’s a sin that it’s an iTunes exclusive

John Mayer is probably the only musician next to Jeff Buckley that can cover a song and do it justice.

This song just hits something nothing else can, reminds me of driving in the middle of the night and feeling like everything makes sense

such a beautiful song and add their own light and special touch to it!! Remakes from talented, true, unique and real platinum recording artists are something to be embraced and felt...thats all!! John Mayer isn't taking credit for the song, he simply took an original classic from one of the greatest musical artists and Americans of our time, whom he was prolly inspired by as a child, and played it from his heart n made it "his own". Music is created to hear n heal the soul..not to be critiqued

His voice is so beautiful and sexy perfect for this song.

The Boss sings "skull," not "soul." He probably wrote it that way because it's a more vivid image and a better rhyme with "dull." However it may appear on some lyric sheets, if you check out other performances, Bruce sings skull, as John has noticed as well.

I think this version is better than the original one...great work John

Mayer does sound like a teenage boy in this song but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I think this version suits him/his personality. Mayer's got nice vocal and executed it very well which gives a different interpretation of the song. This cover might not, ahem, make me blush like Bruce's does but it did put a smile on my face. Some might prefer Bruce's or Johnny Cash but hey this cover is obviously not trash.

You're so right man. In music you may feel discouraged because of someone else's skill level, but it's never been a competition. The only barometer of "good" versus "bad" would be record sales, which is meaningless anyway.

No. Good is something you feel with your heart. Bad covers leave you cold , sometimes just sad or even a little angry. I feel the original version with all my being, let's leave it there.

A couple more observations; the war drum sounds interesting, but gives an originally slow song a slightly rushed feel, and also can't tell if he keeps plucking or not, sounds like he switches to strumming, or he is just plucking really softly. I guess if he gets even one jaded younger person to like this awesome song, then it's an A+ for John : )
