SRV would have smoked him. People comparing the two on here need to their heads checked. John Mayer is pure hokey cokey blues. Mickey mouse. A caricature.

@@paulies5407 You misspelled "John Mayer would play circles around SRV, then he'd write an album's worth of songs about the experience that were so brilliantly constructed, SRV could only have wet dreams about them... let alone even attempt writing them, then John would switch genres multiple times and win grammy's for each genre, and SRV would be stuck doing the exact same thing over and over because he only had the one gimmick, then John would sing in different styles as if each one was the only one he specialized in, and SRV would have to sit back in awe of the extreme and unexplainable talent that he wishes he could be." JM is a once in a human existence level of talent and brilliance that most people like you don't have the intelligence to recognize. But SRV's contemporaries all have and have stated so publicly... So you must know something they don't. Oh, not to mention that when double trouble wanted to play again and looked for SRV's replacement... they picked... you guessed it, John Mayer.

John Mayer missing the second note is kind of an encouragement to me. Even a great guitarist like him messes up, probably in front of a much bigger crowd than I'm used to. But he still carries on with a great performance.

One thing I love about watching John Mayer perform this song is that, while it's the same song, no two performances seem to be identical (I could be wrong -- I haven't seen EVERY SINGLE PERFORMANCE or anything). It's a great song, and John finds ways to keep it fresh.

Ah, young John Mayer... He's an unbelievably talented guitar player and lyricist, but I have just recently (last 5 years) respected him as a TRUE blues musician. And this video is blatant proof of his immaturity in 2006. Don't get me wrong his guitar playing is dead sexy, fast, and impressive in this performance. Because that's what he wants it to be. Give it one more solid listen. You'll notice how he's playing for himself with disregard for the feel. When the song call for smooth he's rigid, when it calls for in synch he's off the beaten path. Today he is much more within himself. His performances on SRV's Hall of Fame induction, JJ Cale's tribute album (Magnolia cover.. so beautiful), and his work with The Grateful Dead reunion are testament to that. I've adapted so many of his techniques into my playing and he's made such a huge impact on the way I approach music. It's nice to see him make such strides toward becoming the premiere guitar player of our generation.

he just lost it, he lost all control, its almost as if he couldn't contain it anymore and he just let it all go. He let all of his emotions run through the guitar and he just let every little thing out. I can't help but goosebumps every time. You can just feel it. That's whats amazing about mayer's performances. Without knowing the backstory, without even knowing what the song means to him its still impossible to not feel the emotion. this song in particular means something different to everyone but what is not different is that feeling. Its almost indescribable but we've all felt it and its one of the most powerful things in the world. this song means so much to me for many different reasons and I couldn't be more grateful for Mayer and his music for getting me through some really rough times. Thank you John Mayer, you are my hero.

Andrew Morassutti Exactly! I honestly can't listen to SRV. John has a more thought out solo style. Its hard to describe why I love his playing so much and don't like most blues players. Most blues is so repetitive. John seems to plan things out with some improv. Pure improv puts my teeth to sleep. I guess that's it.

Andrew Morassutti While I do believe John Mayer is great, I don't think he can be reasonably compared to SRV besides his style. I do think that he is one of the most underestimated blues guitarists of this generation. I wish he would release more songs like this as opposed to his mainstream songs for the radio. Live performances is where he excels.

David D Thats what made SRV great. There were no two live performances that were the same. John is great, but he needs to do this type of music more often. This is what his calling is, not songs like heartbreak warfare (which I though wasn't actually too bad.)

This was John Mayer’s prime!! I don’t know what got into him for the making of continuum but he had all the juice for that record! 🙌🏼

A lot of people talking about SRV, it isn't necessary at all! John Mayer plays like John Mayer, there are lots of influences out there and most of these great guys can do Voodoo Chile' slight return note for note! The way that note sounds is pure John Mayer! Comparing musicians is just going to take your mind off the song!

Hear a lot of influences here, id say the tone was Stevie esq and the chromaticism's he played in the pentatonic were too, but hear some buddy and a little chuck in there too. The way gravity works around that box is quite BB also
