This acoustic version is amazing. As much as I'd love to see him live in an intimate gig like this, it's a good thing I haven't, because I'd end up yelling at everyone to shut their big mouths.

Preach, man. Took me a long while to realize that people don't really give a fuck about the effort you make, it's all about the moment. After getting that, it's just easier to relax while playing.

John Mayer is one of the best musicians and will go down as one of the Greats, whether you like him or dont.

John got something magic in his playing, I can mever be bored of listening or watching him playing live or acoustic. Incredible song, if everyone could shut up this video would be The perfect hand hitted on 21

this is so good, so smooth...really good:)

because it's one of the most used ones, so it always sounds a bit recognisable. plus it's not just the progression, it's what he does with it. i can plan a 100 progressions like that, but those licks and that smoothness is what really defines the song.

Yeah, it's from 2004. The neon-like version of 3x5 that he plays right after this song is the best version I've heard him play.

john mayer is the best at covering up and saving face when he screws up. its crazy. he'll just pause and make a funny sound or something and its like it never happened.

@zschelske1 he's playing an E powerchord w/ bass G# and the rest of the strings are open. Plus little hammerings on and off. Play around with it.

@kpturner02 I'm with KP on this, I LOVE this song, and it intimidated the hell out of me when someone recommended I try it. If you can usually strum along and know the basics chords, this just has a couple of extra embelishments that make it sound so awesome. Don't be skeered, give it a try!

While he might want to change this current girl for another that might be better, he's trying to convince himself that she's good enough ("I'm on the right side"). "You're not the perfect hand but I don't hit on 19." That is a reference to a good enough hand in blackjack to beat the dealer. It's not the perfect 21, but if he hits again (or breaks up with the girl to try out another one) he might get screwed. So - stay on 19.

@runfree3392 The first I heard of it was a a live recording from 2005, but he presented it with the words "This is a song I never really played, because it was a little too early, but now it's right on time"... So at *least* five years old? :)

This was the housing works show from november of 04.. i was there.. my first JM concert.. didn't like kelly hunt though..

A lot of audiences are like that... It's kind of funny when you play in front of a live audience you never know what they're thinking. Some audiences look interested through the whole thing and leave without a word, while others seem to not pay attention at all through my whole set and I then end up selling a ton of CDs and people all tell me how I great I am. It's a weird game...

@TheySaidItIBelieved it's just entertainment to them. I have come to grips with the fact that even though I may have practiced a song for 3 months people won't crap their pants because of it. Just a nice applause and that's it. If they had the passion that we had they'd be musicians.

If you listen to the entire show there is a lot of talking for the first half of it and then it finally got quiet. He did the only version of daughters I like at this show. The improv on it was sick and no one said a word during it.

Ahhh I don't understand how all of these people are talking during his performance haha, if it were me I would be dead quiet.
