Reading some of the comments, I wish to state the following. Nobody is perfect in this world nor ever has or ever will be. We all have our faults and probably so did JM. Yes he always wore his heart on his sleeve in some brilliant performances and songwriting. Look to the music he produced and let it speak for itself. John Martyn - Singer, Songriter, OBE. Most of us don't come anywhere near it.

John Martyn a visionary song writer from the 60's onwards. I expected greater appreciation of this man's unique talents.God knows why.

i'm a Hendrix devotee, but this is as far from JH as it's possible to get - and it's magnificent, pure, astonishing GENIUS!xxx - And he was most probably drunk at the time (he died sadly beginning of last year, from complications of alcoholism - he was only 60) but, my god, could he play!

John Martyn was a GENIUS. It's a shame he had to go, but he left behind quite the legacy. Not everyone can make a standard their own; he officially owned this song. Rest in peace, good sir.

No other guitarist I've ever seen has the gift of TOUCH that he had and the broad range of it from thunder to the most delicate pressure on the strings. Love how this video allows us to appreciate it.

This was the first time I was ever aware of JM when I saw this on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1970, maybe early 1971, and this really turned my head. I hadn’t caught his name, so had to go searching about the Folk & Rock LP sleeves until I found what looked like him in the Folk section on the sleeve for ‘Solid Air’, which I purchased of course! I saw JM more than any other artist, well into double figures, all around the country; saw him do a really great performance at the Kendal Brewery Arts Centre, which was his last there before he passed. I’m 64 now, so when I consider that he was only 60 years old - what a waste, but he certainly lived life like he meant it! 😁

Amazing guitar effects.........!! John was always experimenting. He was so innovative & We ALL Loved him for it!! Phil Collins has talked of his "infuriating Friend" & He having worked with him for the best part of 30 Years truly Loved Him. We must All take John's Music to our Heart & Pass it On to future Generations for them to Love & Enjoy. Only that would be a fitting Epitaph for the Big Man!! His Handshake was a firm One! I'm glad I met this Genius at least once in my Life Doug Reid

John Martyn is the only reason I kept my acoustic guitar. Clapton is nice, but what a voice this man has with his instrument. "Solid Air" sounds like an album that came out of late 90's experimental bands, not the 70's. What a genius.

A very imaginative interpretation of a Blues standard. If nothing else it got a few more rock fans turned on to Skip James . In my humble opinion this track shows what a great vocalist John was. He overdoes the effects peddle, but gets aways with it.

What an amazing talent!!! Wonder if the big man just stumbled across a delay pedal one day and thought... that could be good!!! Utter genius with a six string and his songs from the solid air sessions are still relevant today... great stuff!!!

A crucial altering of the Skip James lyrics: From: "...than to be -that- woman's man..." to "....-my- woman's man..." followed by the last verse's change from: "...he stole her back again..." to "...I know ... he'll steal her back again...". From "I'm glad to be rid of that woman", to "I can't leave that woman," by changing two words.

Have several versions of this on vinyl and CD...but the BEST version is the one I recorded on my Walkman at Cropredy in 1987: its an absolute blinder, better than "Live At Leeds" - and it includes John marching up - mid set - to the sound tower to have a few "choice words" with the sound guy. He and Danny Thompson are absolute giants during this set: one of the best musical experiences of my entire live-gig life, 1972-present (this includes Zappa & the Mothers, Santana, + many other notables...)

  • @rezeski

@Pompstah: It is a very good album. I remember the first time I heard it (on a REALLY crappy "Voice of Music" stereo (one can not refer to this 'record player' as a "system". It probably cost $45... and was junk. But it did get a LOT of use... Doors, LZ, Iron Butterfly... etc et cetera). At any rate, it played and this John Martyn LP (yes, it was vinyl!) blew me away.
