Over a forty-year career he released twenty studio albums, working with artists such as Eric Clapton and David Gilmour. He has been described by The Times as "an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues".

I presume that's a dreadnaught, and he is flogging it like it's a matchstick! He had so much power in those fingers...and such a great touch. Brilliant.

yaisum he fucking treat that dread like a uke bud.... Ian M J Martyn....
John's the reason Blue's never fades...we miss you John...Peace
Now THAT... Ladies and gents, is how to make an entrance. Already playing one of the coolest licks in acoustic music as you walk on. wearing shades... not even looking. Bastard! Why can't I do that?
Yeah blues in A and pick it like this but to get it like that...forget it. no one can do it like John it's his personality coming out. My wife's uncle saw him play in Glasgow and said he sloshed a pint into the air and put the glass down in which the flying beer landed in the glass without spilling a drop. A character indeed.
Truly exceptional. Many can play, not too many can sing so exquisitely at the same time.
The Late Great... Many great memories of the man, his music and his gigs... Feel privileged to have known him albeit briefly and had him play on home turf for many a year! Great Loss in his passing!
LEGEND
Mama loves this in the very FIRST degree, baby. Got the best way to keep my OLD MAN rollin', even if he don't know the blues like we do. Gotta appreciate it all, but you've gotta be true to your own music, too. No matter how you got to do it. Me, I'll just never get married again. Gotta keep my own space.
And Mr. Martyn, you are very welcome in my space, wherever you are now.
God Bless you,a lotta love & respect John Martyn,R.I.P Your music will live on & stand the test of time forevermore ..You are sorely missed x
R.I.P your music touched many and many more
This is the tune you head to the crossroads, and sell your soul to play it like that :P amazing
so close and yet so far away, I missed you that night and always will.
I really do feel that JM just grows in stature. Great interpreter, great voice, great guitar work.... Miss you so much
Ah finally! Been looking for this John Martyn song for over 30 years! First heard it on radio and recorded on a reel-to-reel tape player, but didn't get the name of the song. Thanks! He's magnificent!
John would get you into his gigs for free!!...if you arrived at the door at the same time as the master!! a good dude...shared his time and always would let you take a beer from the crate!! great spirit X great soul X...another great time in the UK for music.

His voice is in that mid period here between the 80s JM and the 'gravel voiced JM'. I really like this period alot, esp vocally, from him. Great to see this on youtube Bernard, and Im *still* loving the DVD!!. (By the way message me back with what you want from me will you...was it 'Tell them Im somebody Else' documentary on John?- Regards, Ian.

intro to the set, strewth
awesome fingerwork! What a song-writer we're missing too. just watched today some similarly frenetic and wonderful guitar playing; Karl Culley playing Icarus and Whisky here; /watch?v=9cEg9GmxiFc
Astonishing playing! Oh yeah, not bad vocals either...
That's in G so what'his guitar tuned to?

Cant see a G chord in that song. The strings maybe all tuned down though instead of standard but like a tone lower. But the song is A E and D with f# bass though with most of the song filled with hammer ons and pull offs that take some practice. The song is driven by the way he plucks and slaps the strings in his right hand. Great tune.

kiltimaghlad All i know is when I tune to concert, Johns A is in my G?
@efcgarv

nRg risn Is in standard tuning though. Though maybe tone down.... if yo know what i mean. When he plays the E chord check if your low E is in tune to that. if no its probably tuned lower by a tone. I don't have a guitar at the moment to check myself.

kiltimaghlad He just went with the tuning that fitted what he was doing I think. Dopped E to D, variations on d a d g a d etc. That takes some doing with one guitar which he must have gigged on one time, but i noticed as yiome went on, three would be a main num for him, one being electric. Personally I am a bit of a acoustic/electric. Drop you some links of a guy I became freinds with, and even one to one jam's!

John Martyn had loads of tunings, so many songs he did different ones from dropped D to dadgad to variations round C and C minor... he got some lovely melodies out of them
Wwhoo! Had to get up an' dance in the kitchen! Hands clappin' n titties flappin'. Yeah! Gotta listen again afew times to understand the lyrics tho. Twirled a couple times too and didn't even hit nothin. Luv them Blues!
How the hell did this guy do all this by himself?
For thr record Easy blues are nothingness but.
i am a huge John Martyn fan, but Joe Bonamassa blows john right out the water with his version.

That might be so, but Bona doesn't have the feel of John, not by a mile. He's good for advertising or demonstrating gear.
