Oh fuck off, as much as we all love Johnny, its a tragedy, plain and simple fucking tragedy. As much as John loved sid hes offloading that little bit of self guilt which for the want of a better word, phrase is innocent guilt. It eats you away and only the strong survive. I know iv lived it.......

John Lydon seems like a very intelligent and likeable guy. The day after Sid Vicious died I went to church as many of my age group did in those days and there had been an elderly parishioner who had died in the same week. The priest peppered the mass with references to our "dear departed Sidney and all those who have died this week" to the extent that I asked him afterwards if he'd known about the death of Sid Vicious. He replied that he had, that it wasn't our place to judge the excesses of youth and fame and that he would pray for anyone he felt might need it.

Jäger Braun I find you quite funny. First of all for telling a complete stranger what to believe and secondly for assuming that back in 1979 I was of an age to be able to choose whether or not I went to mass. Also your self-serving "I didn't get what I wanted on the one occasion I tried means that there is no God" is a ludicrous over-simplification. Still by your name and spelling I guess English isn't your first language so that probably explains it (no sarcasm intended). Have a n ice life and when it's over you'll find out what, if anything, happens next.

Those final comments brought back an experience I had, around 6 yrs old. My mother always fed my friends. If we followed her to the shops we'd all get chocolate or ice cream. And my parents were poor, mum a part time school cook and dad often off work with operations on his stomach and back. Then on day I was with a friend and his mum took us to the shops. She bought him an ice cream. I remember the feeling. I felt for my mother and her generosity to my friend and how mean my friends mother was. And don't say she may have been poor....if that were the case a kind person would not have bought her son the ice cream while his friend looked on. That was a very early lesson that not everyone was like my parents and it made me love them more. It was also a life lesson for me.

John mentions Sid's mom giving him heroin on his 16th or 17th birthday. In a documentary apparently Sid's mom was giving him drugs at an even much younger age. He didn't have a chance, when you're a kid you look up to your parents or parent. Drugs was his bond with his mother and in his mind that's probably how he saw love from his mother, by her giving him drugs. What a fucked situation.

I have a friend whose parents are old ravers who still want to live that life, always doing drugs around her and trying to get her to do them, and when she refuses they call her "boring", mock her appearance and interests etc. Once she walked into the room and they started doing those exaggerated fake yawns. I'm glad she became really anti drugs because of it, it could easily have gone the other way. And she always has a place at our dinner table :)

And at this point, he has inadvertently assumed the position of legend as well! It may seem he is short tempered, but that all depends on who he is talking to. He is dedicated to the idea of exposing hypocrisy, and being honest at all times. When people say that the truth hurts, that is not a metaphor. Telling the truth is painful, because the truth forces people to look at themselves and admit, that they are not capable of dealing with the consequences that come along with being honest. He's extremely intelligent and when he realizes that the person he is talking to is not interested in truth, he becomes annoyed and scolds them for it. He is honest and intelligent. Most people can not deal with people who posses those two qualities! It forces them to look at their own shortcomings.

This is so true when he speaks about the sharing of food in a social situation and a parent leaving a child's friends out of a meal is a dreadful thing to do. I find it the most insulting thing to do to any age. Don't serve food if it means others are left out so rude. John is bloody right about this. I can speak from personal experience on this one - when your parent introduces you (and keeps _supplying you_) with drugs, it's really, _really_ difficult to try and push yourself away from it. It sets up a connection with the drug where you feel comforted by it, and pretty soon it gets to be that you rely on it to shield yourself from life in general. If you're a parent and you give your kids that shit, you should be ashamed because you're robbing your child of a normal life.

I think this concept is so foreign to most people here, that a parent could do such horrible things to a child for those mostly raised in middle class families with privileged backgrounds. Not to say this type of abuse is uniquely systemic to poorer areas, but it is certainly more common place. I grew up in such an area were these things happened, its real, and there are far too many kids being subjected to this type of life and not enough support provided to help them.

I'm glad I scrolled down a bit --- I always questioned the wholesale vilification of Nancy. After reading Deborah Spungen's (Nancy's mum) memoir, I had a whole different view of Nancy. She most certainly did not introduce him to heroin. Their story is so sad, but Nancy has been portrayed as the reason Sid died and often nothing more is said about it. What people need to remember is that the truth is Sid was responsible for Nancy's death and his own. No one will ever know exactly what happened between them that night (Nancy's mum has an interesting take on it, one that I agree with), so anyone who claims to know the 'truth' is speculating, just like the rest of us.

My mother was the same way as Sid's. And I learned an knew the difference between right and wrong, as I believe that we are all born with a sense of knowing. And when I had my son, I knew that my life had to change in order for his to be better. I explained to my son that I could be his friend but that I had to be his mother first. He grew up knowing that he could talk with me about anything but he also knew that drug use wasn't acceptable. I raised him to know that anyone that offered him drugs didn't care about his physical well-being to start with and didn't deserve to be apart of his life. I'm still in treatment (methadone) and probably will be for a long time. I'm present in my child's life and will continue to be, as nothing will ever come before him, on this earth. I have had to deal with my past life for a long time and will continue to until I get better but when you have a child it's not about you anymore. It's about them and raising them to be happy, decent, well rounded people. You don't get to live through them, that's disturbing on so many different levels to me.
