@James Davis That is a pessimistic attitude. We can never eliminate racism totally, but we can eliminate legalized, or institutionalized racism. We have done quite a bit of that already - but there is still work to be done.

He was forged in a different crucible. Doing what he did then meant near certainty of arrests and beatings, and a good chance of death - it creates a determination, maturity and toughness that few have. It reminds me of what one of my grandfathers told me as a kid. Something (I can't remember what now) that seemed very bad was happening and he did not seem fazed by it. He said, "Son, when you've slogged across Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Saipan with Japs shooting at you from every direction, there isn't much back home that can scare you." In his own time, his own way, John Lewis did that same thing.

That's what John Lewis would want us do. At least when you go through the South (that's with a Capitol S) you don't see Whites and Colored signs - how embarassing in the land of the free. Good lyric choice - one of my favorite songs. At least this John was not assassinated like Abraham, Martin, John, and Bobby that the song was written for. I wonder how much better this world might have been if those men had lived as long as John Lewis. I take some small comfort in the fact that after seeing four great men (I include Malcolm X) shot down in their prime in five short years, there has not been another in the past 52 years.
