John Lennox: Has Science Buried God?

Ойын-сауық

Host Eric Metaxas and Oxford professor John Lennox explore the question, "Has science buried God?" -- discussing the fine-tuned universe, evolution, logic, history, and more! "It's like we're an old Vaudeville team" says Metaxas, who eggs the legendary Lennox into retelling his equally legendary roast chicken anecdote. The interview was hosted by the Colson Center and took place in Washington D.C., in May 2019.

Lennox and humility...That is always rich coming from somebody who thinks he “knows” God, THE God, humility by those who think that the universe was created with him in mind, that they knows the one creator of the universe, and know what this divine being wants. Jeah, that has all the hallmarks of humility right there.

Is this real? This guy Eric, representing christianity, immediately speaks of hate which is an element of the purges of the christian church. Hate ignores the true teachings of scripture. These two are feeding their own egos whilst being encouraged and applauded by presumably people of faith. These believers who profess to know the mind of their god fail to display humility with a demeanour that may give me an understanding and desire to know their lord, their Jesus? Atheists and believers base their debate on information of history’s accounts provided by fallible humans. Their contribution has some worth. We can listen, learn, contemplate but never venerate these speakers or give them credence of special insights. They are human, as fallible as those disciples and founders of the early church, as well as its current managers. @@jamesperkins4068 An interesting perspective...however I must simply disagree with the notion that the speakers especially lennox are in any way anti-humble how you got that thought leads me to believe you simply did not watch the whole presentation, as for The host he is quite obviously telling jokes to make the presentation more interesting. As for the idea that these concepts are simply unknowable I again disagree under the premise that the whole of christianity is built under the research of Gods revealing to us which is done via history which has always been an important method of learning fact. Your accusation that these men are attempting to line their pockets I simply find to be Ad hominem and also unlikely to be true yet I acknowledge that you are free to your opinion. Anyway I hope you keep up the search for truth without the idea that the truth is unknowable (As we all would be wasting our time and would have realized sooner). All that to say Jesus loves you too!

@@busterlord6595 Is it Buster?. Some info for you. I was raised in Catholicism, a true follower of Christ. I found it dogmatic and myopic at 16 then at 30 I went to several Christian denominations to compare their worship and teachings, was born again in a brethren church subsequently spent a year at a charismatic UK Anglican. I had repeated doubts about the authenticity of the bible as it was produced by humans who have. since recorded history, generally shown to be not living in the image of their god, fight each other and use religion, their Gods authority, to act on behalf of their nations. I have not found a reference to Jesus needing a jocular character to make his presentation more interesting. During the interview Eric did interject with remarks that detracted from the speaker’s need to impart his knowledge. I would respect him if he directed my focus on the ensuing interview. I know from my own experiences and development that little rational discussion will emerge when belief and bible quotes become the source of ‘proof’. I used to be like that until I listened to discussions of all faiths and atheists. None of them have proof and that no longer bothers me. They are content. Contentment can release hormones of well-being so they feel no need to change what causes them to function satisfactorily. That is until they question and seek further understanding of the human condition I merely suggest to readers that it is worthy to not be too praising of those who promote themselves, who satisfy their own sense of well-being instead of being providers of information upon which we can dwell and can estimate its worth. In all faiths, notably several US evangelists, there are those, mere humans who speak as if they have a special knowledge of their God’s desires, who are followed and financed by those who need a strong voice, by those who are unable to personally find the strong voice of their Lord. You are a well-intentioned person and do not doubt your reasons for your beliefs. That seems to function well for you. Good. You are happily rejoicing with me the benefits of this wonderful planet. I know myself and I know my true identity. I make statements but it is of no consequence to me how they are received. That is the choice of the recipient. May your God be with you. Jim

The Messiah died sometime in the 40 years after his crucifixion on the 1st Day of Passover Friday April 7, 30 AD and was entombed in the JesusFamilyTomb.com (and on KZread). The literal physical Ascension into the heavens is a myth. God-incarnate has been famously reincarnated many times in the last 1,950 years. Have you read 7seals.blogspot.com ? I love how Lennox, clearly a very brilliant man, comes across as intellectually humble and honest. His ever present clarity of thought and ability to communicate deep philosophical arguments in a cogent manner make him perhaps the finest modern proponent of rational Christianity. Doubtless, recalcitrant atheists will instantaneously and dogmatically close themselves to his solid arguments, but some open-minded agnostics who really take the time and effort to mentally digest his writings may well find themselves pulled a bit closer to the possibility of a deity. In any case, he is an absolute joy to read, watch, and listen to.

That is no proof for gods though, not for unicorns, jesus or other zombies. Creationists had years to prove their case, and they dropped the ball each time they are asked to bring evidence. I forwarded the evidence for evolution, I explained how science rules work, and who is obligated to prove what. And I pointed out that certain fallacies do not apply.....and that repeated strawmanning indicates a lack of integrity. The Oligarchs must have figure out this (fascinating) point from Dr. Lennox a long time ago, and instead of outright shutting down the philosophy courses, they have just coerced them into teaching the tenets of Communism or Corporatism necessary to generate obedient, willing slaves. This is yet another debate about the unprovable truth with the presenters who promote themselves and, of course , their status and income.

I believe that the reason why Jesus will wipe away every tear, is not because some of our family or friends won't be there with Him, but the tears will be because we never realised what we could and should have invested in heaven, we will come to a realisation of what has been missed for all eternity, yes, missed for all eternity. Like John, after I rise to my feet when I have finished worshipping Jesus, I will say, "Thank you." Words which sound so hollow, but which cannot convey anything greater. Thank you Prof John Lennox. Jus love ur sharing so much. Praise God

‘why does a kettle boil?’, the answer from a scientific perspective would link to the chemical properties of water and its response to heat. Though this does not fully answer the question, as the reason the kettle is boiling is because the kettle was turned on because someone wants a cup of tea. - John Lennox

What is "Science"? It's just an acceptable narrative on why the World is as it is. But that narrative can changer from one scientist to another. There are laws of physics that cannot be countered. But even they don't tell us why things are as they are.

I've always felt in my bones that atheism is laughable, and Iv tried to make my own analogies when going into discussion with others but I could never lay it out so clearly. This is yet another debate about the unprovable truth with the presenters who promote themselves and, of course , their status and income.

@@nancycrayton2738 I appreciate your answer. But mixing science and religion is a bad idea. (It's something like not separating religion and state.) But that's what Lennox is trying to do and it is rather damaging religion. "If you really want to know if God is who he says he is" Your God is a human tradition and there are many different religious traditions. So it's not "God" who says "who he is" it's humans and their tradition who are claiming different things to be the ultimate truth. That's dividing. So I could also say you are troubled in my opinion. What do you think about Hindus and their tradition? Is something wrong with their belief in your view. And if yes, why don't they see it like you. And why are Muslims thinking, Christians and Jews are wrong? And why do most religious people think nonbelievers are troubled? Something is wrong here. But I'm sure you can't and don't want to understand that at all. I have never met any religious believers who could change perspective on this. It's just very unlikely. And I think that's a reason for conflict in this world. Just look at Trump in the USA and how he is a danger to this world by denying the human role in climate change. And he wold not be in his position without the Evangelicals.

@@wassilykandinsky4616 I'm not an expert. I'm a Christian. I'm not religious. My Lord and Savior is Jesus Christ. I'm not John Lennox, C.S. Lewis, Stephen Meyer or Peter Hitchens. I'm a nobody. Again I ask you why, if you aren't searching for something, you are drawn to a site where a Christian apologist is expounding to an audience of Christians or people who simply want to understand why people believe that Christ is who he said he was? I can't answer that for you. I simply said I loved that John Lennox's statement. I'm not the one you need to question or try to engage in debate. I'm simply a Christian.
