John Lennox - Belief in God in a Naturalistic World

This video is from an event co-hosted 18.10.18 by Laget Norge (Christian Union Norway) and University of Agder.
Lecture by John Lennox, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and Emeritus Fellow in Mathematics and the Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College, Oxford.
John Lennox explains how you can believe in God in a world characterized by scientific perspectives, and how faith and science can come together.
John Lennox specialized in group theory, but is better known as a philosopher of science, having written several books on the topic of science and God. He is also renowned from debates with prominent opponents, such as Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Peter Singer, Michael Shermer, Lawrence Krauss, and Victor Stenger.

@@ohdehhan Faith is never based on facts. If we had all the facts we would not need faith. It is presumed here that most people have some idea of what a staircase is, and therefore when seeing the first step can recognize this to be the first step and have confidence that there are more. It is this confidence that leads to faith. Those that have no knowledge of staircases or what they are would not draw the same conclusion and therefore do not have faith that they are going up or down in the direction they wish to go. In the same way, I believe in God the God of Abraham because of what I know, and for me, the evidence is in science "research in the work of God" and as the creator of all things seen and unseen. Why is it so difficult in accepting that a great meal is created by a chef or cook or an airplane flies because of engineering and design but the universe did not have a designer.

@@hermanushulsen9151 My point exactly. Beacuse most people have an idea what a staircase is, and they know in fact they exist, they can be confident in infering that there will be more steps. Not really the definition of faith (ie. Not being based on facts), is it? On the other hand, someone with no idea what a staircase is taking the first step... That is faith.

Scribes, in all religions, were paid big money to write about messages that the gods were giving to them, so of course, for each individual scribe to keep writing, was the greatest of temptations. Those many conflicting stories, is why, rather than uniting devotees, the stories divide devotees into right-fighting groups.

I wouldn't pay the scribe for a single word beyond what I had dictated to him or what he had been contracted to copy. Anything extra, and he's just wasting his own ink and paper. In fact, if he hands me some messed up stuff I'd have to go back and correct, he can just keep it, and I'm not paying him at all. I'll just go find somebody else to do the job I want done.

@@OneEyedJack1970 Devotees would all only want scribes that would be willing to reflect their own systems of belief back to them. No matter which religion, the problem with people reading words in books they believe contain holy information ... is ... they then want to become preachers, rather than students, and they want to instruct others how to be "saved,” or “enlightened” ... and all because ego doesn't have any way of controlling itself. Non-human animals don’t suffer from such mental blights. A person can't be searching for truth, while already claiming to know truth. The brag of knowing truth, smacks of nothing other than egoism. I finally came to conclude that they were right, and added that all of us that believed the universe was created by a god, were in cults. Now I believe we have two choices. We can either believe that the universe was created by an entity that designed suffering as part of its plan ... or, we can believe (as did Stephen Hawking, before he died) that the universe always existed, and will always exist ... no plan involved. And his thinking is evidence based not like yours. You think if you do not want to understand then how can you understand? This is exactly what your problem is with your question. I can give you the answer to your question, which even John does not dare to go there. Nevertheless, let the one find it who is searching for it like it would be the greatest treasure.

At 54:15, modern integrated circuit layout often involves random layout steps. One may of course argue that this is "directed", but I still "trust" the results, even though the electronic chips have pseudo randomized designs. I have often found that Lennox doesn't know much about the science or engineering he discusses. I don't mind those convenient little stories that religious apologists often tell, but the ignorance combined with arrogance is sometimes a bit much. Btw, as far as I know, I've never met a scientist or engineer who doesn't believe in minds. Lennox, as usual, seems juvenile when he talks about such things.

No john Lennox the reason Dawkins and Hawking say their is no God is because they have spent years working in their fields and have not found evidence that lead to a God! They dont have some idea to deliberately disprove God! This is a reason that shows how desperate Lennox is! Pehaps you should study the subjects and produce scientific papers instead of mocking something that you dont understand! John Lennox says that we sound dumb when we go outside our fields, exactly John Lennox this is what you have been doing for years in your debates when you have acted as though you understand the earth sciences!
