John Giles would walk into any Leeds United XI, I admire his modesty/ loyalty for his team mates for not including himself in his LUFC XI. Great player, great man.

yes a living legend, one of the founding fathers of Leeds as a club as we know it. Only, Giles, Eddie, Lorimer, Reaney, Charlton, Clarke, Jones, Mcqueen and Jordan are now left.

I’d actually respect him more if he did put himself in...I don’t like fake modesty as much as I don’t like arrogance...he knows he was a bloody great player and should say it loud and proud

1969 swedish television started to show English football on Saturdays and I loved seeing all the greats of the late 60's and onwards; I've had the pleasure to see great players like George Best, Bobby Charlton, Charlie George, Peter Osgood, Frank Worthington, Bob Latchford, Billy Bremner and Johnny Giles as I grew up. Leeds had a fantastic team during that period and I remember both their FA cup win in 1972 as well as the shocking defeat against Sunderland the year after. Like many other swedes I love English football, what a pleasure it's been to have watched so many great teams and players! I have tremendous respect for Johnny Giles and his knowledge of the game as well as his great history as a player!

I had the great privilege to meet The Midfield General at Elland Rd when he was signing his autobiography. What a gentleman - we had a great conversation and he was encyclopaedic in his memory of matches when I first came to watch Leeds - amazing! It was like talking to an old friend!

I first watched Leeds when Don Revie arrived. The first live game I went to see was when Stanley Matthews arrived back to play against each them for Stoke City. I saw Don decide to select young players and he signed Bobby Collins to look after them. Jack Charlton was a bit of a rebel but he settled down as the team got better. I watched Leeds get promoted then take Division 1 by storm and I watched some great players against them. They never looked back. Johnny Giles was masterclass and his selection was perfect but with him as the midfield general. I was a big fan of Mick Jones because he could hold the ball and then lay it off. Alan Clarke always popped up to score great goals and Peter Lorimer just smashed them and took the goals or defender with the ball. Eddie Gray was as good as George Best and both were fantastic to watch. Norman Hunter was tough and very skilled alongside Jack Charlton. His timing was brilliant. Man and ball. Some great players followed but this team was the always the team to beat. They were the victims of their own success and some dreadful decisions. Cheated out of the European Cup and 2 league titles at least. The biggest mistake the Board made was letting Don Revie leave and then hiring Brian Clough without Peter Taylor. A great era with many magic moments. Just look at the Man Utd, Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea teams they played against. But as my father said many times Johnny Giles was the first name on the team sheet. He was total class.

I don't disagree about Giles filling his Xl with the Revie era players but he should have included himself as he was such a phenomenal player. Giles makes a great point about how most of the teams who pipped Leeds for titles were only really competitive for short periods. Only Liverpool could match the consistency of Leeds. Always love to hear Giles speak - a genuine football man.

Great Knowledge from John Giles here. But the Centre back position is a hard position to fill for Leeds United.. Remember Leeds Had - John Charles, Rio Ferdinand, Norman Hunter, Jonathon Woodgate, Lucas Radebe, Jack Charlton and Paul Madeley(He could play at this position) .... My side would be this.....Martyn (GK), Reaney(Rb), Dorigo(LB), Radebe(CH), Ferdinand(CH), Bremner(CM), Giles(CM) Eddie Gray (Lm), Gary Speed(Rm) Mark Vidakua (CF) and John Charles(CF) . Subs: Norman Hunter (CH), Gary McAllister (CM), Allan Clarke (CF), and Paul Madeley (Play any position) and Paul Robinson (Goal Keeper) - What a side!!!

Gerard Burke Mark Viduka was a powerful striker, no argument there, but he was seen as a selfish player, whereas Mick Jones was a goalscorer but also a creator of many goals for Allan Clarke. As an individual player it’s a toss up like you say. I’d just pip for Jones as he was more of a team player.

Gerard Burke Viduka had a better goal per game ratio (I think) but it’s not just about that. As Giles said he was a tireless worker who created for others, and him Sniffer had a great combination.
