Caleb Johnston. At sections he is playing both the rhythm and lead parts simultaneously that Bernard Sumner played on two separate tracks on the recording. When JD played the song live, Bernard would play the leads in their specific sections of the song and then switch back to chords/strumming sounds during the singing(he kind of varies between them). You're absolutely correct that the body of the song is quite simple, but to play the two parts as an folk arrangement for one guitarist is a bit trickier overall. John did a good job with the arrangement actually.

@@virginiaknighten4687 Ian Curtis was the lead singer of the British band Joy Division who sadly took his own life in 1980. This is a cover of their song, depending on where you’re from you may have heard their most popular song - ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ If not, I’d absolutely recommend you look at their 2 albums: ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’. My first time hearing this song...It’s beautiful...Who is Ian?

@@virginiaknighten4687 Ian Curtis was the lead singer of the British band Joy Division who sadly took his own life in 1980. This is a cover of their song, depending on where you’re from you may have heard their most popular song - ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ If not, I’d absolutely recommend you look at their 2 albums: ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’. There’s some absolute gems on both of those records!

@@rucky1419 thank you for your response...I definitely will check them out. I only heard of the RHCP about 2 months ago. And John has really moved me to no end. I’ll be 72 tomorrow but it is never too late in life to discover new music. KZread has opened up a brand new world for me! Take care and I’ll listen soon.
Great cover of Joy Division!!
ΤOP 10 GUITARISTS...FRUSCIANTE IN POP ROCK HISTORY.! ALWAYS NEW TECHNIQUES WITH HIS IRON FINGERS!
Holy shit, John is so fucking good. He single-handedly played the rhythm and the melody on the guitar and sung it perfectly. What an amazing cover.
Damn!!! So Beautiful!!

Still amazing in 2020! Hail The king
I'm a fan of Joy Division and of Frusciante, but hadn't known of this cover. Fucking incredible.
OMG, sitting here in awe with goosebumps, what an insanely touching cover! Beautiful, he puts so much heart & soul into it! ♥

Ok, that was sick!!
Thank you Ian Curtis!
Always cool to see such an iconic British song enjoyed by our American friends.
It takes a lot to pull off that iconic bass riff with a guitar but this is how you do it ❤ RIP Ian Curtis, thank you for the comfort you’ve brought to those is us suffering even though it’s been decades since you left us ❤
Mon guitariste préféré qui joue une des plus belles œuvres de mon groupe préféré. Et en plus avec émotion. Merci John
omg how could this be even better...
Probably the best version of New Dawn Fades around. Frusciante is a amazing!
Only cover I can feel, others just don't feel right.
How the hell does he even play it this way? Amazing.

Seriously. If all that sound is coming from that one guitar, I don't know what to say.
Can tell John loves Joy Division :)
He even asks them to turn it up at the beginning like Ian did with this song. Crazy
The way he plays with such tenacity bet he could strum an accoustic louder and faster than a lot of musicians then and now probably
oh my gosh, he is so fucking amazing guy i ever hear
I love how at the end he says "This is a sad song from my new record... It comes out tomorrow, I think", like he doesn't really give a shit about it coming out.
one of my favourite covers by John, i love it
Thank you to whomever videoed all these. :)
this is awesome. i love him and his music. he's just such an inspiration to my life.
I usually don’t care for covers of Joy Division but this is amazing
Got here because I was listening to the John Frusciante cover songs compilation without the video. By the time it hit the chorus or something, thought it was not one guitar playing right? So I'm here now and confirmed once again why he's my favorite guitar player of all time ❤❤❤

john frusciante is the reason i know and LOVE joy division. thanks for this and so much more, john!
Great cover and tribute ,maybe the best I've heard..
Love it!! this dude has been through a lot!!
John. One of my favorite guitarists. This is a great live with lots of emotional feelings. Him and His guitar.. that's it.
Wonderful!! Much Love to you!!!Thank you so much!!!
Top notch musician with impeccable taste in music
Frusciante is a god of music
Angel on Earth. He thanks 'us' after his performances... we thank you, John.
Every time I see this concert I feel like cutting my head off and bury it under the ground. I can't believe it. It's the best show ever. Fuck. I wanna be there. I love you, John.
Yess, ever since i saw him doing this version of joy division in vienna, I wanted to hear it again, and here it is. Great!!! Coool version in Amsterdam.
This is simply excellent!
I usually don't like covers, but this is really good. I especially like how Frusciante was able to combine the bass and guitar lines.
Grande artista, digno de expressar esta melancolia!
Awesome!!!!! Frusciante is the best...
Господи как я счастлив что услышал это))))!!!
This means so much to me man, possibly my two greatest musical loves and inspirations coming together here on a song that already holds meaning to me. "A loaded gun won't set you free - So you say"
Fantastic mate
2021 and still the best cover.
AHHH im going to learn this right now. it would be so nice to play the bass and the riff together. john frusciante is the man
Man I totally forgot about his cover of this song. My heart is melting hearing it again after so many years.
amazing cover
Holy shit, I never realized that John was this fucking awesome as if I had any reason for doubt
wow ! just great !
My fav Joy Division song by one of the best guitarist ever!
so great guitar work john and soning of course ;)
I love that one too, but it's nice to hear two so different versions. This is really well played as well
This is my favorite from Ian - now thank you John!
Amazing Cover
He transformed to Ian Curtis. He play and sing this in just a high level. Like it very much.
My favorite music of the Unknown Pleasures!
It makes it even more haunting that JD played at Paradiso and made the most gut wrenching version.
I LOVE YOU JOHN

Extremely easy even ,people who do not play instruments think these things are much more complicated than they are . The difficult part in here is reproducing John´s own touch and way of playing it. His vocals are amateurish at best from a musician´s perspective too . Oh well , here come the invitations to record it better :-)
Amazing...
Incredible
Geweldig!
Impressed.
