Just to clarify. The guitarist is Mark Lizotte with a stage name of Johnny Diesel (later known as Diesel). He is the brother-in-law of Jimmy Barnes.

These guys are Australian music royalty. You could spend months and months working thru their music careers, solo and band !! Enjoy like I have through out my late teens and adult life!❤

Yes the GOATS John was born in England and migrated to Australia with his family when he was about 10 year's old. Jimmy was born in Glasgow, coming to Australia at around 5/6 years, Now their Australian national treasures, we love them, and are so lucky to have such talented artists, and fantastic people that they are. The singing was definitely live but the backing track was not.

Just an FYI, only the vocals were live in this performance, live television thing of the time..

Yay !! Back with the boys... I love that even though these two are generally competing for the same charts, they are always respectful of not trying to outdo one another when they perform together... If you ask Farnsey who he thinks is the best blues singer (not just in Australia) he will say Barnsey.... Jimmy is and has always been a huge fan of Farnsey's voice... and then we have the brother in law Mark Lizotte(Jimmy's wife is the sister of the guitarists wife ... Diesel... who is well known in his own right ).... Diesels vocals are amazing - great range.. but his playing is also sooooo good....

Usually on those sort of TV shows... the vocals would be live but for some reason there was never 'time' for the whole band to soundcheck... I think that's crazy, especially when bands are as professional as these two... but that's generally how it was ... As for rock... Check out Long way to the top (AC/DC) live from his concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra...... and he also has a recorded version (no live performance or video ) of Led Zeps Black Dog... which the band did as a warm up / sound check before a lot of their concerts..One of the guys on the desk recorded it and I think it found its way onto one of his bootleg albums at one stage.... (many will correct me if I'm wrong... hahaha... ) definitely both are worth a listen/ watch.....

This performance was on a 'live' variety show. The backing track would have been recorded, but the vocals and Diesel's gui9tar are live.

This duo is pretty much the only pairing where neither has to hold back for fear of drowing the other out.. Both equally as powerful belters yet two completely different tones that blend so perfectly with each other. Both were initially shit scared to perform together as each has such a reputation of being ridiculously incredible vocalists and I guess maybe thought they'd finally met their match. But in the end it worked out perfectly. The pairing was just electric. And they ended up being great mates. Just a shame they didn't do it more often And you worked it out. The music was pre recorded the only live activity was John Farnham Jimmy Barnes and Deisel the guitarist. The closest thing to heavy metal that John has done is maybe his cover of Led Zeplins Black Dog. But I'd probably call that more Heavy Rock. Would love to hear your thoughts. It's a sound check audio so no video. But it's bloody good

Seriously, you guys need to see Cold Chisel doing Wild Thing live from the Last Stand concerts in the early 1980s. It's one of the most amazing live performances you will ever see. As someone else has said, it's better than Hendrix's version and Jimmy's vocals are killer.

This was on a weekly tv show, Jimmy and John were actually singing live the band was pre-recorded. This is not the norm for Australian artists although this was the exception.

Raw Aussie talent right there, the fact these guys pull this off live just shows they’re the real deal!

Well spotted, the band miming to a recorded backing track and live vocals on the TV show. They solved the problem of the backing track fade-out with the a cappella ending. There are one or two fully live band versions on KZread with Diesel on guitar if you are curious.

John's voice, he toys with you. Just freakish pipes. 🥃😎

As mentioned below, Farnsey has covered Led Zeppelin - Black Dog, and ACDC - Long Way to the Top, Queen - We Will Rock You. Queen did offer Farnham "the gig of a lifetime" to be their lead singer, however he did not.

Search Johnny Farnham singing Black dog, he never recorded it, but it was his warm up / sound check song. One of his sound tech guys recorded it one night during warm up. And the guy on guitar is Jonny diesel, he is Jimmy's Brother inlaw, they married Sisters.

This was done 'live' in the studio and the musicians stopped playing as having sung this before on stage together they always ended it A Capella. So the band knew. Grab a look at John's version of an AC/DC classic "Long Way To The Top' (if ya wanna rock n roll) from his concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. John know how to rock lol

I'd say, seeing as the guitar doesn't have a lead in it, common practice was to do live vocals over a studio mix sans vocals.

The guitarist who steps forward is a singer in his own right, Diesel (he is also Jimmy Barnes's brother-in-law). The large bird at the beginning is Ozzie Ostrich. He was a star on an Aussie entertainment show called Hey Hey Its Saturday.

Check out John Farnham, doing Blackdog as a sound check, audio only. If this is how Farnsey warms up, you can imagine what the concert’s like. Another couple of favourites are Long Way to the top, John with the MSO (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) and Jimmy with Joe Bonamassa, Stone Cold.😊

Yes John can cover all styles and was known to do Led Zeppelin's song Black Dog as a warm up tune for the whole band and also in concerts did ACDC's 'It's only Rock and Roll' which for me is the best version of this song!

You are absolutely right though, the music was a complete backing track for TV shows. But the vocals were all for real. Diesel is actually Jimmy Barns' brother in law. As in all genres by John, he can also sing Opera. Look for his live duet with Anthony Warlow called "Granada" Especially if you like a bit of musical comedy.

Took a while! I've been waiting for this one 🤩 John Farnham does a great AC/DC cover of "It's a long way to the top", and he uses a Led Zeppelin song "Black Dog" as a warm up. Jimmy Barnes does a great version of "Good Times" with INXS. Speaking of crossing genres, Australia has an awesome Country singer called Kasey Chambers who does an unbelievable cover of Eminem's "Lose Yourself" at the Civic Hotel in Newcastle, Australia. Worth listening to!

It's ABOUT TIME you got back to Australian talent again - there is so much on offer! ... and band - John Farnham only has the best musicians and singers in his band .He respects them all, has a history with them, often features them in solos and gives acknowledgement to them in any live work. John can sing musical theatre check out a video called Anthony Warlow elevates us to “high art” . Anthony is a musical theatre singer and was our phantom of the opera for years in Oz. You’ll be very surprised at his voice in this. As mentioned in another comment he used to sing Zeppelins Black Dog as a warm up for his voice. Yeah he can sing anything! He has amazing range! But please wish him all the best in his recovery from a very serious illness and surgery recently

Live vocals over an instrumental backing track for sure, I noticed it on an old Doors tv performance clip the other day as well. Maybe it's tv studio practise in some cases.

The musicians are not playing, It's a backing track. TV studios demanded it back then. The vocal is live. There are live recordings but the vocal is on point here so it is fine. Oh and the Guitarist is Diesel, Jimmy's brother in law, check him out with his band The Injectors

So im gonna let you two in on some hidden gems from Johnny. Theres an epic canadian BMX movie from the 80's called RAD, John was asked by director Hal Needham to do three songs for the movie. Two of the songs "Break the Ice" and "Heart of Thunder" are absolute bangers and borderline metal with guitar solos. Its my favourite movie of all time and it has the best soundtrack.

You are right about the musicians. It is widely known that Hey Hey would use pre-recorded music when artists appear (usually because they don't have all the instruments). But the vocals & Diesel's guitar is live. John Farnham does not pre-record because he will adlib too much.

I saw Diesel (aka Mark Lizotte) last year on his own as part of the 'alone with the blues' tour. It was AMAZING! All three of these artists are phenomenal!
