John Dillinger: Public Enemy No. 1
When criminals like Bonny and Clyde ran amok robbing gas stations, banks, and grocery stores, the FBI coined a term to describe the new kind of criminal they were dealing with: Public Enemies. But only one man earned the title of Public Enemy No.1: John Dillinger, bank robber extraordinaire.

He had a couple hidey holes in IN-MI-IL, if memory serves. It sounds crazy to think of him hiding out at his sister's, but Bonnie and Clyde made frequent trips back home, too. That got them in the end, but it's the kind of thing that's more common than a lot of people realize, which is exactly why police check those places frequently.

It would be a pretty short bio… a navy guy who spent WW1 as a POW, an unrepentant Nazi and Hitler worshiper butt-boy and Jew exterminator until his death, Grand Admiral of country with no navy, murdered thousands upon thousands of civilians, sacrificed 30,000 of his own men to sure slaughter, president/head dunce of a dead country for a week, buffoon of an old man, then died…
Great summary, makes me want to re-read Public Enemies. The thing I can never get over is how after a big score in the Midwest or Plains areas, those guys would high tail it cross country in early model cars with no amenities, no highway system, no motels/drive thrus/convenience stores...just travel cross country bit by bit. Makes me appreciate the luxuries we have today.

The Robin Hood “legend” was truer than most know. My dad grew up during depression, our family lived in the Martinsville -Gosport-Stinesville, Indiana area. Dillinger always made sure the kids had a little pocket change, a nickel bought a lot candy in those days. Several families who were doing poorly would get some groceries from Dillinger as he could be really kind. The folks he helped loved him and helped him when he was “on the lam”. My great uncle recently did one of those DNA test things to figure out where most of our family hailed from. Turns out, John Dillinger is my 4th cousin and now that I think about it, my grandfather (my moms dad) looks just like John. Like, if you put pictures of them next to each other you'd swear they were twins or at the very least very closely related. This blew us all away. Then we found out that our family actively tried to make his memory forgotten in our family. Which, I can see why they wanted to do that. Nobody really wants to be known as the relative of public enemy number 1. That would make it pretty hard to find a decent paying job. Thanks for sharing!

I'm late to the party but I wanted to share this. My parents grew up in northern Minnesota during the 1920's and '30's. Gangsters would live in the hills at times near there. By doing so they could scurry over into Canada to evade law enforcement should the need arise. My Mom said at times when going to the nearest town to pick up odds and ends they would see the gun molls doing the same. The men would send their women who weren't wanted by the law. It was easy to identify the women who were dressed to the nines in colorful clothing. During the depression they made quite an impression.
For more information about what happened to the three main gang members, Harry Pierpont and John Mackey were sentenced to death for the murder of the sherrif and Russell Clark got life without parole after his lawyer talked the jury into clemency. On September 22nd 1934, Mackley and Pierpont led a failed escape attempt where Mackley was gunned down but Pierpont survived. On October 17th 1934, at 12:14AM, Harry Pierpont was fried at Lucasvile Prison.
