John Denver-"Rocky Mountain High"

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.~ John Muir ~ Naturalist

I am finally going to visit the beautiful state of Colorado - its been my dream as long as I can remember. I am 55 years old...raised 3 amazing children as a single mom...spent many many years broke and struggling...now they are grown....all graduated college...my eldest daughter moved to Denver 2 years ago and I was supposed to visit her in May for my birthday but it was cancelled due to the wonderful VIRUS....now...in 2 weeks I am finally getting to make my trip...I am so overwhelmed with emotion and excitement....I have listened to this song 25 times in the last week....and I cry every time. Thank you John...xoxo

Hope you enjoyed your visit to Colorado. I was fortunate to live there for a couple years in the early 1980s. I loved everything about, it, skiing hiking and anything outdoors. Unfortunately I never made it back. I’m much older now, but the memories I have of that time are still crystal clear. I loved it there.

"He was born in the summer of his 27th year, coming home to a place he'd never been before." I identify so much with that line. I feel born again every time I see a beautiful place for the first time. I remember driving up to Utah. Leaving Cedar City, the cheap rental car struggled on the mountain road with the engine growling noisily. I pulled off at a scenic turnout, shut off the engine and stepped out into the most profound silence I have ever experienced. Not a manmade sound to be heard or sight to be seen. I broke down and cried by the side of the road.

I'm living that life he sings about. Fell in LOVE with the Rockies over 30 years ago. Back in 2015, I took a tremendous leap of faith and moved to be near the mountains (going on 9 years now) with just one suitcase and $16. I'm still standing here. Loving every minute of it. NEVER been happier. God put me here for a good reason. I met my husband of 7 years shortly after arriving. God had plans that I was unaware of at the time. Let God guide you to your place of JOY no matter where he happens to plant you.

@Just Me I know. Same here, I always caught that reference, that it was to someone who 'came home' to a place, for the first time, that felt like his natural home. It was only when I was teaching in a university here in Khon Kaen (Thailand) some years ago, that I learned that JD had actually been born in New Mexico, and that Colorado was his 'adopted' home.

I moved to Colorado after I graduated college in 1983 and have felt like I was home. This beautiful wonderful state welcomed me on and I have taken it for granted. I wake up and do my morning chores and when I see the mountains in the mornings I am thank full to live on beautiful state where I have been fortunate to have seen an eagle fly

My connection to this song is deep. My best friend and I used to take road trips listening to this song as we went on our adventures. The crazy thing is when John Denver says, "they say he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun and he lost a friend but kept the memory. Now he walks in quite solitude the forest and the stream seeking grace in every step he take". Well that was me when I went on our Colorado trip. See the past year has been really hard, even when I take the trips we planned. I know he's there with me even if he's not physically here anymore. He took his own life on May 1st 2019 and left me in my lonesome to take our trips. I bring my dog with me but he was the only best friend I had. So this song always reminds me of him and I in the car on a road trip, blasting John Denver with the windows down on some Arkansas back road trying to find our way.

My moms favorite song ... I scattered her ashes at the summit of Pikes Peak as I had always promised ... She was born and raised there and then spent over 40 years in Florida with my dad and as he promised her when they retired he took her home in July 2003 but sadly she died from malpractice in November 2004 ... I thank God every single day for letting my mom live long enough to go home ... She hated Florida ... My mom was only 60 when God called her Home .... I miss you everyday mom but I carry you in my heart FOREVER!!!! You were truly the BEST!

when my husband and I were truck driving for FedEx, he would take either I-40 or else I-80 to avoid the mountains through Colorado, as one never knew when it would storm there on I-70. Yet on our last trip west, he said to me, "just for you, I will drive THROUGH those mountains so that you can see them!" and he did---and I will never forget the MAJESTY and beauty of what I saw!!! Thank you God, for that and for my wonderful guy who did that for me!

diane baum I used to be an owner operator for a small outfit in Al. I had put close to 3 million miles on my old 87 Freightshaker with an old school 425 Cat. When I got a load out to Utah from Charleston. I told my dispatcher that since I had a week to get there in my large car I was going to slow down enjoy the ride and have fun going thru 70. She told me to be safe and have fun. I did just that til I saw white smoke rolling when I was at the Rifle, Co Rest area. My poor girl was dying on me. As it turns out, my worst trip $$$ wise was my best trip every other way. I was towed to Grand Junction and while waiting for my truck, I got a ride to NM where I rode the steam train from Chama NM thru the mtn. passes and rode the bus back. I chartered a ride back to grand Junction by private plane and had a blast. I put another 250 thousand on that old Cat b4 I retired her. BEST BREAKDOWN EVER!!!!!!

diane baum Funny story driving from Buffalo, NY to California, we ran into a snow storm in the mountains. We thought people would think we brought the snow from Buffalo. Its crazy in Buffalo we get 10-12 feet every winter from Lake Erie. That's nothing compared to 1977 Blizzard we got 19 feet in that storm & City & Schools were closed for 3 weeks. People were afraid of Buffalo like people were afraid of the movie JAWS. Back then we only got vistors because Niagara Falls is close. Always WHITE XMAS IN BUFFALO

He was one of the few musicians who sounded exactly the way he did on his recordings, which is always refreshing. John, his guitar, and a few backup singers. Cool beans.

*Back in the 1990's I hiked up to the top of a mountain for the very first time and found this amazing beautiful view of nature. So I camped right on that spot with this beautiful view. That night, I dreamed it was day time again, bright and sunny, looking out again at this same beautiful mountain view. And then off from one side, no joke, John Denver walks up to me and takes off his round rimmed glasses and puts them on me. He did not say a word - but was just smiling at me the whole time. He was saying without a word - now you see what I see.*

There was a coffee shop across the street from my High School and every morning, back in '72-'73, someone would play this song while we had coffee and a doughnut. So ever since every time I hear this it takes me back to Dewey's Diner, and all my friends from school....Great job!

I saw him not performing but eating breakfast at So Lake Tahoe in Jan or Feb 87. He joined our group at Heavenly Valley up by the stage of his annual ski tournament! We all just let him enjoy being his true self and all of us few folks would have aided him had anyone bothered him..but the chemistry of friendship was there and he was happy to be among our little group of maybe 20 young folks that early morning. He cooked his own his breakfast hotdog with us, got a Miller light beer and we all appreciated him especially. It was a fresh powder morning and the rim of that beautiful dark blue lake was very pristine!! It was so neat to enjoy him without his guitar and safely in our watch! That was a rocky mountain high morning!! John enjoyed his quiet time with us. That was just a few years before his life ended! He lives on in good memories!!
