John Deere X300 Series Transmission Pulley Replacement (Tuff Torq Trans Pulley Replacement)

Whenever there is a noticeable noise that you hadn't heard before coming from the transmission area of your lawn or garden tractor, we usually fear the worst while hoping that we're wrong and it's just something simple to fix. And let's be honest, we hope that it will not only be a simple, but an inexpensive fix as well! After we posted the video showing how to adjust the foot pedals on a John Deere X300 & X500 series tractor we received a lot of comments and emails thanking us for that information because many people thought their transmission was starting to fail. In some cases, it was even worse than that because people were being told by dealers that their transmission would need to be replaced even though the issue was caused by the adjustment of the foot pedals. Well hopefully we can help even more people with this video. This is another common issue with the John Deere X300 and X500 series tractors as well as with tractors from many other manufacturers such as Husqvarna, Simplicity, Cub Cadet, etc. The symptom that you will notice is that there will be a growling noise, and possibly excessive vibration, coming from the tractor's transmission. Because this is all coming directly from the transmission it can lead you to think that it is an internal problem with the transmission and it's probably going to need to be replaced. But if you look a little deeper into the situation you will probably find that the extra noise and vibration is coming from the pulley on the transmission. The pulley has splines in its bore that match up with splines on the transmission input shaft. The transmission shaft is made of a harder material than the pulley so the splines in the pulley will wear instead of the splines on the transmission shaft. They are made this way because it is easier to replace the pulley than it is to disassemble the transmission to replace the shaft. Now that you know this is the issue with your tractor you are probably thinking that you will need to remove the mower deck, remove the transmission, and then you'll be able to change out the worn pulley, right? Well, you could go through all of that work if you really want to. But as you can see in this video there is a much easier and quicker way to remove and replace the transmission pulley on a John Deere X300 series tractor. We also tell you how you can save some money on the new pulley while still getting an OEM replacement pulley.

Ive had this happen on an x304 and x300 where it totally stripped the teeth. On one i just used jb weld in the splines on the old pulley. Worked great. New pulley is $35

Thanks for the vid, snap ring was a mother to get off due to space and for me it was easier to get new pulley on by pulling on the right side harder. Nice and quiet now, another 20 years she is good.

Thank you for sharing your video. The snap ring removal was an issue. I finally went to Harbor Freight and purchased a Qinnn snap ring removal tool. The pins didn’t break like the Titan tool did. I would recommend the Motion Pro 08-0127 Heavy Duty Spring Hook Tool. If the spring releases tension on the pulley you will need this tool.

This just happened to my X300 pulley today. Suddenly it would just whine and barely move. All the splines stripped out. I dropped the transaxle and split the case to change the oil out for 2 qts of Castrol 5w50 Syn. Now on the hunt for the pulley. Just watched your other video about the pedal adjustment. I have Limited reverse so now I'm anxious to go see if the pedals are out of adjustment. Thanks for the movies.

When I worked on all this stuff, I probably changed a hundred of those pulleys on Tuff Torq transmissions. Multiple different brands of tractor.

Hello, I have a question and your opinion ? I have had my pulleys changed twice. Once the new pulleys have been installed the noise goes away. But after I use the x300 all summer and use my cyclone rake to pick up leaves the noise seems to return the next year? The second time I took it in for the noise they said the pulley wasn't bad( I had purchased a pulley and told them the noise was back) they when ahead and changed it and the noise was gone. What is your opinion do you think the trans is bad? The video was very well put together and you did a great job explaining it. thanks for your help. Gene

Everything is made in China, a new John Deere even has the" made in china" labels still stuck on the parts.
