I purchased my S170 4 years ago and I love it, it matters not if I’m mowing and hauling my cart full of mulch it has plenty of power.

I have been back and forth researching lawn tractors. I currently have my father’s JD lx255. I believe the S170 and 180 have the K62 transaxle which is an upgrade over the K46.

Good review, just a word of warning, don't use it pulling anything over 50lbs, and only do it occasionally it only has a K46 transaxle, you can get pretty good life only mowing and hopefully you don't have to hilly yard, I do suggest you drop the transaxle every 150 to 200 hrs, there is no drain hole so you need to turn it upside down with fill hole removed, then refill and put back on tractor, this will greatly improve the number of hours you can keep it working, this sounds hard but really it isn't, take belt off and a few bolts on each frame and it will drop (be careful with the plastic fan) you can find it here on youtube showing how its done.

Would you recommend a different mower for yards with a 15-20 yard slope/slant? Thank you sir

I got a 155 and easily 200 lbs …and it’s almost 7 years old and 240 hours with nothing major to be repaired so far….and I over abuse it like I never even dreamed. And I got a huge hill that I have to climb it every time I do work on my lawn…. And don’t know if I’m lucky or it’s a dream lawn tractor….but it sure did a fantastic job so far. Next one will be another JD for me…maybe a little bigger but not by much…good enough for my 2 acres of land.

I have had a s170 for about 4 years, I pull a trailer with it. Usually full of mulch and sometimes I pull that trailer up hills. The s170 has the heavy duty version of the hydrostatic transaxle. I think one the s170 and s180 have the heavier transaxle. But so far no issues. Love it

Very nice man.just don't over do it with the towing.the trans isn't really made for it.its not a garden tractor best to use for cutting grass or very light weight towing

How would it do mowing a ditch? The slope. Don’t know exact grade but it’s fairly steep. I’d say it pushes 35-45 degree in spots but it’s only about 2-3 passes wide.

@@HomesteadingandHungry thank you. I mow straight up and down it. Sideways would definitely roll I’d think.

have an E170 which quit running after 25hrs. I'm not saying it was the quick-change oil system or just a bad engine. I ended up having a new engine put in it. The new engine is the same engine 24HP that is in the S series but I had the dealer put the conversion kit on and did away with the quick change.
