Great hack using the belt to hold that spindle in place, thanks! If you don't have a pulley puller, in the past I've used a rubber mallet to tap around and break it loose, much like removing a stuck rotor on a car. Thanks for the video!

Great video to change out the spindles (on my X590). I don't have an impact wrench so will try to block the blade first to remove the upper nut on the spindle. Thanks for making the video.

Any idea how to fix mower deck height adj knob. It’s frozen rock solid. Also diff foot pedal on left side floor board is frozen. Purchased X595 used. Primary use here in NE was to plow with it. I TOOK rusted Curtis cab off and now in the process of de-rusting it. Seat adj was frozen solid as well got that free yesterday with copious sums of penetrating oil, sitting on tractor moving forward and back until it broke loose using my legs and core. Great workout. I’m so sore today! :-). The Rest of the tractor looks great. Frame engine etc. Yanmar purrs like a kitten. This thing needs some TLC, but I think it’s worth the effort. Any advice is grateful.

Just a note that if you buy the cheap aftermarket spindles you'll need to disassemble them to verify that the bearings are not sealed on the internal side. If they are then any grease pumped into the zerk will never reach the bearings.

A little trick to keep your spindles going for years, and this is a major problem with John Deere lawn tractors! You need to open up the spindle assembly, remove the bearing, pop the cover off of the bearing and pack it full of grease. Then reassemble. Some leave the cover off the bearing on the side facing downwards afterwards. When you're greasing your spindles on a John Deere, the grease doesn't penetrate into or even close to the bearing inside the spindle and they come pretty bone dry. This will save you a ton of money down the line. Even if you're adding new spindles I would do the same process before installation.

Just got done with a deck rebuild kit for my LA105, everything works fine except for the new blades in the kit. When I started the mower up and engaged the blades to cut they we're hitting each other. They are basically identical to the old blades but will not work, had to put my old blades back on the mower. Anyone else have trouble with blades hitting each other?

I see you Hank putting grease on the mower blade bolts. I just watched a couple days ago on "project Farm", a guy running a test with salt water and heat to see if never seize works. He also used grease. The never seize actually worked. Over at Western Truck & tractor he put never seize on cattle trucks that came in every year. He said after a year no trace of the never seize was ever left. I also watched a guy take out plugs from a 5.3L Ford truck and never seize did nothing to keep the plugs from breaking

I did the same for yrs. I learned you can rebuild the existing spindles. the bearing is common #6032 put pulley nut full on and pound top down, center shaft will fall out the bottom, remove top nut you will see the two bearings per spindle, pound the out and replace with new #6032 bearings and reassemble. 30.00 will buy you the 6 bearings. pro tip: remove the rubber seal on new bearings and remove factory grease, which by the way looks like vasoline, now put red syn lithium bearing grease in there and snap rubber seal back onto bearing. the bearings will last much much longer than minimum factory. the new spindles have grease zerts but they really do not do much good because the bearings are sealed. usually only the bottom bearing has the top sealed removed to allow grease to get in there. i find it much easier and better to just repack the bearings.

John Deere dealership told me the four bolts in the spindle housing are self-tapping. You want to purchase new ones, because if they don't break during tear down, they will break off in your new spindle housing.

Battery operated 1/2 inch impact is a great help in working on mower decks. A deep socket impact metric socket set was a little more then $20 bucks at Harbor Freight has been useful. My cordless 1/2 inch is a DeWalt bought at Lowes. Got the bare tool since I already had the 20 volt batteries. Have a Bolens that the Drive Belt Pully can't be removed and put back on without an impact tool. Not way to hold its shaft. An impact tool makes it much safer to work on mowers.

My issue is not having the impact tool, especially since the spindle on blade-2 was ripped out of the encasement of the outer shroud. So, the blade is off and I was able to pull the entire spindle shaft thru the top of the lower body. I am going to add a new piece of metal stock to resecure the spindle to the casing if that makes any sense. My issue is getting this 7/8" nut off the top of the spindle. It appears to be frozen on, didn't know if heating with a torch would help? Already soaked it in WD, but this thing is a bear to get off. Most videos I have seen, they have been using impact drills, of which I have none. So, a 7/8" box wrench and only a pipe wrench to hold the lower section where the blade attaches. Any other ideas to get that sucker off? Thanks much!

Usually the issue is leverage. Get a big piece of hollow pipe (like a metal fence post) and attach it to your socket wrench and give a good hard pull the break it loose, maybe that will work, good luck!

Go to e-bay or have someone who can buy on line do it for you. Some spindles are selling there for about $21. Went to a John Deere sight that sent me to the local dealers site to buy my parts. Prices high and shipping high. If you go to a John Deere site to buy parts try to find one not tied to the local dealer. YOUR Best Bet is e-bay for parts for John Deer. I bought a D100 mower deck with all parts preinstalled for a little over $700 that included shipping costs. Great deal - instead of welding a cracked mower spindle mount. Order and got the deck in about a week.
