My neighbor gave me a running but oil caked L120 a few years ago. I finally pulled it out today and I’m sure needs the exact same repair. Your tutorial is 1st rate and I’m sure will make this repair much more straightforward than just my own trial and error. Thank you for outstanding work 👏🏼

While some comments have offered slightly different tips/techniques, I have to say that of all the vids I have seen on B/S repairs yours are very thorough. You would make a great teacher - explaining exactly what you're doing and why are the hallmarks of someone who could easily pass on their skills. Now, I have to go to work on my Husqvarna yt22v46 mower. Thanks and take care....

Thank you for your kind words.
Thanks, Real Man Skills! I watched this video and learned a lot. I have a John Deere LA145 with the B&S 22HP V-twin, looks like the same engine as on the LA130 you worked on. Mine has 550+ hours on it, frequently in a dusty environment, and it sure doesn’t look as new as this one. Mine did fine up the the 500 hour service, but has started consuming quite a bit of oil. I haven’t had a good look at the outside of the engine yet, but will do that soon.

I'm toying with a LA145 as well. Have you been able to work on yours yet? If so, are all the parts numbers the same for seals/gaskets?

@@Peradime, no, I haven’t looked at mine yet. I will probably get to it next week. I have a new hydrostatic transmission to go in it and will look at the engine then.

@@billmckinney7398 popped mine apart today. It all looked the same so far other than torx head screws on the oil pump, and single cable for throttle/choke. I'll pop back in if I run into any issues with parts matching up.
Needed to comment and say thank you for the thorough breakdown for each part of the disassembly process. I’m looking to do the same because of a possible broken camshaft and your video was the only one I’ve seen that explained each process by detail. Thanks again. Liked and subscribed 👍🏽

Thanks for the video. There are some things I would have done differently, although nothing wrong with your methods. I would have cleaned the exterior of the crankcase first, including using some emery cloth or scotchbrite to get the crankshaft completely free of rust. After removing the top I would pump out the oil, wipe up and clean inside well and stuff the case full of clean rags to prevent any debris from dropping inside. I like to remove difficult gasket material with a brass bristle wheel in my Foredom tool or Dremel. I would have lubed the inside of where the new seal went and the seal itself and seated it with any soft object that fit it well like a piece of PVC pipe. I would have turned all the screws down until they stopped, in one shot, then started the tightening sequence. I would have scribed a permanent mark into the aluminum to indicate CCW rotation setting of governor arm. That’s all! 😉😂👍🔧🧰

I have a Craftsman DLT3000 with that same engine and it had the same leaky crankcase gasket. It seems that these V-twin Briggs and Stratton engines are prone to that problem. Worth fixing in my opinion. Thanks for watching.

@@RealManSkills I have a Mahindra 1626 tractor with 6ft befco finish mower I usually mow with but it's been at dealer for over a month waiting on parts so I had to have something to mow with just can't do the push mower thing anymore especially on 4 acres. Just got finished fixing the Husqvarna ran it bout 25 minutes so far so good it's pretty sweet little mower. Yes definitely worth fixing. Thanks again for the video

I pack new seals that have a spring with wheel bearing grease, it keeps spring in place 😊
You might want to try putting a couple of ounces of AT-205 Reseal in it before doing all that. A couple of ounces of it stopped my power steering pump shaft leak on a 2000 Ford Expedition. That was about 3 years ago. Don't overdo it and give it some time to work.

I just did this and my pto shaft is leaking. Ugh!
Governor shaft seal is often overlooked and not replaced but there really bad at leaking
Other thing I do is order a B/S over haul gasket set, what’s left will be used later
What I do in the area they AllWAYS leak at I use electric engraver and work it over there, gasket will stay put then
What was the part number for the crankcase gasket?

No thank you!!! My gasket was worse then yours!!
42:35 Maybe it would be easier to put the oil seal in AFTER the cover is put back on, and using a pipe or deep socket the same diameter as the seal, or slightly smaller.
@RealManSkills

That's another way, yes.
Great idea to replace both the crank case gasket and the output shaft seal so not to have to do the 2 seals 2 different times 👍
They have the nerve to tell us to clean out the thread locker from the bolt holes with a thread chaser, when it’s obvious they didn’t use any at the factory. My bolts rattled loose. One fell completely out. That’s why I’m here 😭

What is going on with the paint John Deere is using every one I've seen the paint on them is flaking off

It’s likely poor pre work. If the metal is not cleaned and dry or if it’s not primed it’s gonna peal. I’m betting JD is not using high end auto grade primer or finish paint. They just want to get them out of warranty before it happens.
