They hold the tree all the way down to try and not bust the tree when it hits the ground. If you let those just fall they will shatter. The trick is to open the grab arms just as the limbs touch the ground (and also before the tool cylinder comes to the end of it's stroke) so there is no shock to the machine. Running a buncher is the best job there is. You have to think, plan, and concentrate all day. You get lost in the work, and the day flies by. Never get bored.

Don't quite understand why the operator keeps the grapple arms closed so long by laying the tree's down. That creates a lot of stress on the whole buncher...
