Pretty cool watching myself drill beans, we drill beans in twin rows blocking off half the openers I ran this setup for 8 years and had a 4955 on it 1 of those we sold 8760 and are now running a 340 magnum row trac on the drill big tractor does a great job explaining everything 👍 and I can tell you the folks who did the videoing got a lot of exercise in that 60 acres

The 8760, for me is THE "Big Green Tractor" sure it's not that big in the grand scheme of things, but it was in the cab of our old 8760 which I have my earliest recollections. Ours had the 24 speed gearbox, no PTO but had 710 duals on it. And, for only 300 horsepower it had some kick! Sadly we had to sell it on recently, but I hope to get I back someday

When I was a kid, the biggest argument between farmers was cultipacker in front of or behind the drill. About 50 / 50. They all had good crops, guess it didn't matter!!

Very nice outfit and 8760 looks to be well-kept; is this the same one you filmed a few years ago? I run almost same exact outfit...even right down to the Haukaas markers and a fitted yellow tank tarp; However, I'm pulling it all with a JD 8300 and running a WXP series Brillion packer. When all goes well, you can really cover some acres.

When I hear powertrain specs on these tractors, I'm not hearing torque mentioned very much. It's all horsepower. An engine of 10 liters in my mind should do better than 300-350 hp. Seems like farmers are paying more for a relatively small volume production run of motors that carries a very high fixed cost, and JD could lower prices by using high volume production engines from other suppliers that produce just as much horsepower. Maybe knowing torque output would change my mind.

  • @lynwessel2471

A tractor in the 35000 lb range is capable of putting 300-350 hp to the ground without excessive slippage. For an engine that needs to be designed to run at rated power all the time you get better longevity if its running well below maximum hp. VS a semi tractor needing full power only on acceleration and up hills.(Pro Stock tractor pullers get 4500 hp out of that engine for 300 feet, lol) That 619 engine was used in multiple series of tractors as well as forage harvesters, construction machines, and stationary engines for ag and industrial applications. The 8960 had a Cummins engine. At that time 400hp was a large 4wd for the Midwest. Those needing huge went to Big Bud etal.

@@lynwessel2471 to me, horsepower is speed capability, not pulling power. Torque is pulling power. All motors have an rpm that gives maximum torque, without running maximum rpm. I'm understanding your post, and still not totally convinced that that huge displacement motor is necessary, and with proper gearing a smaller motor from a third party with better economy of scale would benefit farmers' wallet. It might be a touch slower, but it will do the work for less cost.

Really no point in debating tractor design from 35 years ago.HP is a rough number for comparison, pounds of drawbar pull is what matters to farmers. Thats why theres the "Nebraska tests", dont need to rely on manufacturers claims. Plenty of tractors available with Cat, Cummins, Mann etc engines if thats what you prefer.

  • @rayrussell6258

@@lynwessel2471 no, I'm not debating 35 years ago, I'm talking about tractors sold today and in the future. And I'm also not talking about Cat Cummings etc. I'm talking companies with REAL economy of scale, like GM, Ford, and other high volume automakers.
