John Deere 2038R Baseline Power Test with Turbo Boost Numbers

The power numbers on this one are perplexing because they seem to fall well short of what is advertised. There may be a good explanation...but I haven't found it yet.

Yeah the Deere site says TNV88 but down below they list an 86mm bore. Not the first time it's had a mistake. Yanmar uses IHI turbos on most of their turbo engines if you were wondering. Not sure that the 30.4 PTO HP is realistic for stock. It is 36.7 HP gross at the crank with no accessories connected. Deere doesn't publish Net HP for any of their compact tractors but a realistic loss of 3 HP is a fairly close. So now you are at 33.7 HP minus about 6-8 HP for drivetrain and your about 26-28 PTO HP. Also I don't know that Yanmar uses multiple injections in these engines. If it had pilot injection it would be a lot quieter. Lastly, the 3TNV86CT is rated for 2500 thru 3000 RPM so the 36.7 HP at 2500 RPM is the same as Yanmar 's website.

The Deere site and tractordata.com both say that the 2038R has a 3TNV88C-NJT...but I guess I should look on my 2038R to confirm. I don't know why I didn't do that rather than rely on the website. I'll have to do that tomorrow and report back (unless you have a 2038R and that's where you got that info on that model. It would make sense that it's a 3TNV86CT because that is what the 3038E is.

ah...just read @matthewdixon6909 's comment after I responded to this one. This makes much more sense to me than what I had read on the website.

Did TTWT do the 3310 vs 2038 on PTO dyno ? I remember the Kubota was slightly down on flow vs 2038

As someone who looked at the 2038r and 2032r, it was my understanding that the 2038r is actually a _smaller_ displacement than the 2032r - which is really confusing because as you said, the Deere website calls out that both of them run a 3TNV88C which is an 88mm engine. But if you scroll down a little bit on the tractor spec page, it calls the 2038r a 86x90mm engine giving it a displacement of 95.8cu in vs the 2032rs 88x90mm or 100.2 cu in. Very confusing! I would say maybe check the model number on the actual engine itself? I can do the same on my 2032r if you're interested.

I had my manual lying in the office so I had to double check - page 400-1 calls out the 2032r as a 3TNV88C-NJT2V and the 2038r as a 3TNV86CT-NJT2V! Looks like the Deere website is just wrong here. For some extra fun, it says that the rated engine speed is 2500 rpm and the engine torque at that rated speed is 64.5 lb ft for the 2032r, and 77.2 lb ft on the 2038r. It also gives the max torque at 1625 rpm of 77.4 lb ft on the 2032r and 93.7 lb ft on the 2038r. All of this is coming from OMTR123177 Issue G2 of the 2032R and 2038R Owners manual for North American markets.

    That’s because John Deere’s data is wrong the 2038r is a .9 liter with a turbo the 2032r is a 1.6 Below is breakdown of the engines used: 3033R - 3TNV88C 3039R - 3TNV86CT (Turbo) 3046R - 3TNV86CHT (Turbo) 2032R - 3TNV88C 2038R - 3TNV86CT (Turbo)

@@GoGoggansGothat list looks right but I’m fairly certain the 86C is a 1.5L still - it’s only 2mm smaller in the bore, it’s not a huge difference in displacement but clearly a different design (aimed at boosted applications clearly)

2038R owner here. My data tag on the valve cover lists it as a “3TNV86CT-NJT2”. This is a 2019 model year.

Kevin - I'm not sure how to react to this video... Should I be ticked off at Deere for marketing yet more details about my 2038R falsely? Or should I be crazy excited about future Hydros Plus options making my tractor yet again perform the way it should from the factory?

The answer is "Yes" :) I don't want to get mad yet until I measure a few more 2038s, but I've measured mine a few times with the same results.
