My 2140 steering developed a leak and thought it was more than I could handle so I took it to a john deere dealer for repair. I got it back a week later and the leak was gone. After that the steering would wander to the right when at idle. Disappointed with the dealer, I ordered the rebuild kit online. After a few days of gradually taking the steering apart (lotsa pictures) and reassembly, now the steering doesn't leak and it doesn't move on its own when you don't want it to. Its amazing what one can do with a little patience and time to rectify something. The steering wheel had been removed by the dealer before so I didn't have the stress of removing it like you did.

I have mine apart and need to get those 6 o-rings installed back inside the housing. I'm concerned getting them in there properly without ruining them when pushing the shaft back in.

I can tell you've done a few of them Lance......helps if you know where everything goes eh! However most people have a video camera, usually on their phone, so just video it as you take it off, and you'll have a clue how it goes together. That tip was told to me by a good friend years ago who was an ace tractor engineer. Before digital cameras etc he bought a polaroid and just took a few pics. Just thought it worth passing this on....might help someone.....

Thanks for the video! Now, I have a question for you. I kinda need to get this old gal going again, drooling out under steering wheel and kinda leaning towards replacing the 6 o-rings only alternative that you mention. Since I got the entire seal kit, I would probably replace the dust barriers up under the big nut at the top as well. Now, at that point, should it decide to continue leaking, it looks like I could remove the whole valve assembly and do the bottom half without re-removing the top and chancing damaging the already-replaced seals. Thoughts?

Going to check the pitman lock nut and then proceed to take out the control arm connecting the pitman to the column...if there is nothing wrong there either then it´s the fishbone or seals in the column i guess.... 1976 JD 3130 OPU Cab with HFWD. I recently removed the steering column from my John Deere 2130. I didn't strip it as it was working fine previously but when I refitted it I could not get any hydraulic function, neither power steering or the front loader. If I blank off the hydraulic feed to the steering then the loader works perfectly, but when I reconnect it nothing works. The column has now been stripped but no faults found and it has been rebuilt with new seals. It has also been inspected by a local JD dealer who says it looks fine. Any ideas what might be wrong?

G Day Steve, Being a closed center system that is telling us it is in your column. Are you sure the 6 o rings are in the correct grooves and there in not a ball missing in one of the two valves which would dump all oil to sump. Hello , I have a jd 300 ( industrial version of 1020) , 5 years back I used some value price hydraulic fluid and lost power steering one direction , loader only worked is steering was held hard in the direction it worked .I removed the column and disassembled, but when going to dealers for advice was told " no one here is old enough to remember those , we do not have parts or service manuals for anything that old" . Had all the parts laid out in order , but with grandkids , all the seals and o rings have gone missing . My question , do you know if all these vaves use the same o-ring pack ? Or what other tractors used the same (eg: 1020 or 2020 etc). There seems to be very little info on the internet , what with these being somewhat rare

Great video Bundy Bears Shed! I have recently traded up a JD 1530 that seems to be a nice old tractor. I do notice that the tractor has a lot of "room" in the steering. If you try to drive on the road it is a chore to keep it aimed where you want it. It had a bellcrank bushing replaced and new tie rods and drag link. I am wondering if that slack in the steering is related to what you are rebuilding now. Mine has power steering. Any thoughts you care to offer?

G Day Robby, The steering column should move up and down when you turn from left to right, that works the valves in the column. Have you checked the nut on the top of the pitman arm is tight? The steering has priority as a safety feature so that is probably not too far from correct. Try blocking the steeribng off and see if that helps, you may have a steering column leak. Does fhe front pump destroke? If not there is a high pressure leak somewhere.

I wanna first of all say thanks for these videos, I was able to pull apart my Column and start rebuilding it.. only issue I have is my tractor is the 401c variant and the "steering piston" is different.. so my kit didn't come with a "Piston Ring" and I can't find the part anywhere.. the part # is T34246 and it says it is no longer available :( . The Oring my kit came with is too large to fit in the recess of that piston and the design is slightly different so I don't know if I can just order a piston from say a jd2020 and use the oring my kit came with.. I feel I may have to just order a re-manufactured column. The column was in need of the new orings.. the previous ones were all dry rot and was missing a few of them :(
