John Deere 14T knotter failure diagnosis

The roller on the wiper arm was missing the cap that holds it on. Judging from the rust it had been broke for awhile. When I tripped the knotters the roller came off and jammed between the Intermittent gear and the knotter gears fracturing the knotter frame in three places.

Well I was pretty disappointed that it broke. After I got it torn down I felt better about what the cause was. I was a mechanic for John Deere so now I get to fix my stuff instead of everyone else's :-)

@@SoybeanFarmer3300 LOL SBF no I got that from my Faith in the Lord. Having been a mechanic for John Deere gave me experience on fixing farm equipment along with growing up with farmers in my family. Our family reunions where always at haying time. We all got together to put the hay up in the barn. Back then it was mostly manual labor. Didn't have all the fancy gadgets like they have now.

Great vid! The 14t's are great balers. The more you push them, the better they bale! We learned to work on ours. They are an easy baler to learn

Persistence always pays off! Sounds like you figured it out, regardless of the reason you figured it out. There are alot those parts balers around this area. No one uses anything but NH over priced stuff. I hope you can find what you need asap. If not let me know, can put some feelers out here. Would be shipping , but I'm sure parts would be next to nothing! Hoping all works out, look fwd to updates!!

Thanks Nelson I really wanted a NH 273 or an older 68 but just couldn't find one or got out bid at auction. One thing I have learned is never give up. It was a pretty daunting task to tear it down. But you can't be afraid to tackle tough jobs. Just got to jump in with both feet. You either sink or swim but you learn something.

@@Pennies_on_the_dollar Thanks Nelson. I try to stay positive. A lot of New Holland equipment around here. New Holland was started here in PA. We always had NH balers on grandparents farm. Kinda lucked into finding the JD baler. They lady I got it from knows all my cousin up here so thought I would get a good deal. She told me baler had been rebuilt. You know gone through and repaired or replace any defective part. Lot of parts on a baler. The part that broke might have been overlooked. No one is perfect. It was a part not visible until I took the knotters apart. Can't blame anyone. I got it at a price I felt was fair and willing to pay. Even with having to repair I am still saving money new balers are over $20,000.

All State Ag Parts: find on net and see if they have the complete knotter assembly from a salvage baler. Worth the call. You'll need the model and serial number from your baler JD part number for the knotter assembly will help too. Should be $400.00ish or less for a good used assembly IF they have it. E-bay is a good source as well for used.New sub: go through my video uploads for what dealing with/repairing decent used equipment is like. If you are going to rebuild what you have the roller is retained with ,simply put, a washer center welded on the end of the stud the roller rides on.Look closely at the other one: looks close to same type of failure.

Thanks have bought from All States before. Found a complete knotter for $467 from Green Baler parts. After taking the knotters off found where the roller came from and why it causes the knotter to break. Have the part # for the knotter E49854.

Saw in comments you were a JD mechanic so you can relate to this. Running my 2030 yesterday and blew the high pressure steel hydraulic line under the right floorboard yesterday.Had been "fixed" before with brass braze rod by another owner. Did same brass braze on new rub through break and added some rubber padding to hopefully prevent next vibration induced rub through. Back up so now I have time to source the new JD steel hydraulic line.

Hey Scott I do appreciate your help. After getting the knotters off I figured out what happened. I have found a knotter assembly for $469.99 used at Green Baler parts. Thinking about calling them Monday. Had found the knotter frame new for the same price but with the assembly I won't have tear down the broken one and rebuild. Just put on the used one and make sure everything is on time.

Only thing I can think of is something is out of time. I had flywheel pins shear but only because the baler was jammed with too much hay.
