John Deere 1023E with the Baumalight Stump Grinder

Ойын-сауық

Hi folks, stump grinding begins at 5:15 if you want to pass on my prep commentary. This operation went well and there were no issues, just lots of hard work and now firewood for friends and family.

Correction, the cameras are IP69 weather proof, not IP65 as I had previously stated in the description below.

Kool vid. I didn't know they made stump grinders like that. Looks like it will do the job! I thought when you hit that rebar you knocked some teeth off the wheel. Merry Christmas.

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't either until I saw one of TTWT videos. Yeah I think they were all there when I cleaned it up, but I didn't check the condition each, probably need to do that. They do give you 6 extra teeth as replacement teeth, so I have a few to play with. I'm happy I silenced that part of the video, I said some choice words. And Merry Christmas to you Wayne!

That is a $300+ stump depending on location. Most guys will take care of the surface roots within a certain distance off the stump before charging more.

@@FloridaDeere how well do you like that grinder attachment? I own a stump grinder already and thought about adding one of these to have.

@@gilbertfaulkner8395 It has been one of the most useful attachments, if the priciest one. No regrets, other than I wish I had a tractor to run it and had bought it years earlier. It has some limitations but you can get it in a fair number of spots and will probably be the quickest attachment to pay for itself in my tractor side hustle.

Hello great video . I'm also thinking of buying a stump grinder but I like the tractor 3 point hitch model like yours. I have figured out its more cost effective to buy this style of grinder over a real true stump grinder or stand lone style which costs over 30k . I'm sure a guy can setup some mirrors to aid the rear view of the grinder to help with neck strain issues. I'm not a green tractor man but I'd buy a similar tractor like yours since you have had great success . Beside a tractor is way more useful than a true stump grinder.

George, I believe you are right, tractor is way more useful and this type of stump grinder is way cheaper. SO my guess is that these while useful are somewhat less useful than a traditional stump grinder maybe. I do have to start with a low stump and then grind through the stump, so I have to go one way all the time. But I would gather that for 90-95% of stumps, they are just as good as the regular one and way cheaper. So I'm a fan. It's funny, one advantage to having one myself is that area in the video, I have also ground up once since and also need to hit it again. I used to quote over the phone, super bad idea, you definitely have to see each stump, otherwise your quote is too high or you're ripping yourself off. Thanks for watching again.

I really do want one. What about rear view mirrors? Do you think that would alleviate the neck problem? I got the mirrors because Ii was having similar problems backing up with the backhoe. Cheers. Excellent video presentation.

I don't think mirrors would help on the stump grinding, other things yes, the angle to the stump grinder wouldn't be good.

what is the pto hp. of your tractor? And what is the rear remote used for? It looks like it is hooked up to the stump grinder

The alleged rating is something like 14.5 or 15. It has easily handled everything that's been rated at higher hp like the bush hog, tiller and this. TTWT did a video on PTO hp for the 1025R, different engine I know, but they are rated at 18 and he was getting 25hp FROM THE PTO. So my guess is to meet whatever new regulations, JD has "rated" these what they did. I'd say my 1023E (all of them for that matter) are likely 18-20 pto hp. Just my guess based on what's it's handled and to some extent backed up by Tim's video. I use the 3rd SCV for the hydraulic top link. It's not directly linked to the stump grinder, but I can angle it with the top link as well as tilling and it's most useful while bush hogging. It's an upgrade I highly recommend.

May I ask what you charge to do a 25" stump? Thinking about getting one myself

Well good question, I just quoted a guy $10 for smaller stumps, like 4-6" across and $25 for larger ones like 12' or slightly more. Now he had like 30+ of the smaller ones, and about 10-12 of the larger ones. The larger ones looked very much rotted, but I said I'd do the numerous roots shooting off of them too, so that adds time. But maybe some of that price was sheer volume as well. I won't show up to do three small stumps for $30, no way not a chance. I will likely be doing a fair amount of other work for him. His property is well suited to the size tractor I have. I often turn people away on very large jobs, just not the right fit.

@@FloridaDeere 1025r tractors are great for certain size jobs. I just got my tractor and I love the 3rd function with grappler. Thanks for the info. There is a guy at my work that charges 5 bucks per inch on a stump.

@@silverbeard7062 At first I wasn't sure what you were talking about but I stand corrected. I checked the owner's manual again and I do read them, but missed that I guess. With is in there, I do have more control. But I had a job today and sure enough, it 's not as easy to use without the pin, but there's a lot less rocking the tractor. Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching.
