It hit me recently that John Deacon is not singing backing vocals on albums because I distinctively thought of Queen as a band, in which every member was a singer, a musician and a songwriter. Turns out he WAS singing, although mainly on live albums. To my delight I actually do know his voice and can easily tell it apart from Taylor and May singing: it is very distinctive and... Actually adds a bit of uniqueness to some of the live recordings of Queen. Very pleasant uniqueness.

He sang backing vocals at every Queen live show. He's a good singer. He just rarely recorded. Why? Because he wasn't needed. Freddie actually used to sing a lot of his own backing vocals. He obviously couldn't do that (sing lead and backing vocals) at live shows, so Deacon used to sing them with Taylor and May.

What concert was that "Lap of the Gods" from at the end? Their singing is kind of sloppy, but there is something so wonderful about it, like just a bunch of friends singing together after having had one too many. And it almost sound like Deaky's voice is carrying them through it all, which is quite a shock!

Cretmistress, love your comment (late but still!!). Ja, saw them live only one time but John Deacon did have a lovely true voice, exquisite pitch too. He adored this song - the concert in budapest (Hungarian rhapsody 1986) you can hear him clearly, also others on youtube, I should post a list one day. John sang backup vocals in many, many live concert performances over the years with queen, whenever the band needed him to. Mostly he was just happy to let Freddie shine, he loved Freddie's voice. John was very modest - he occasionally joked 'I can't sing!'. Freddie was also humble, called himself 'a mediocre pianist ' (he was phenomenal really!). Genuine modesty from two such incredibly talented and diverse musicians.

Perhaps John had just an average voice, but up against Freddie's, it must have been pretty intimidating for him. But he sure was fun to watch as he danced around with his bass on the stage at every concert! Here is a great video from "86 Wembley concert with the cameras on Deaky for the whole song...and he is dancing in those cute yellow micro-shorts! Enjoy! kzread.info/dash/bejne/anp9r8avp7mfZaQ.html

Courtney Och, absolutely! I saw them live and John had a lovely true voice with excellent pitch. He sang whenever the band needed him to, regularly sang backup vocals for live performances. This is a cute vid but there are other concerts where john can clearly be heard singing (in the lap of the gods, budapest 1986), with gorgeous picture quality - I will post a list one day! John was just modest and very happy to let Freddie shine. He occasionally joked 'I can't sing!' the way Freddie said of himself 'I am a mediocre pianist' (Freddie was a phenomenal pianist ofcourse!). For two such incredibly talented and diverse musicians (and sass gods!) they were both actually very humble. I have always adored Freddie and John.

If only somewhere he sang on a studio mixed album because during performances not everyone is on their game. We are hearing different notes from various different shows from varying times during performances, of course there will be bad sounding harmonies. You must take into account fatigue, split concentration, and self preservation, you can see this happen at harmonies where all parties are concerned with either getting the note sung or belting it out as loud as they can. This ABSOLUTLY destroys harmony in performance hence why Deacy sounds worse than he is.

I second this comment. So many people still think singing voices are heaven-sent and unchanging, but the truth is that there's a lot of context mixed in as well. Really impossible to tell how 'good' he was generally without more stuff. He sounds no worse here than how many actual frontmen sometimes sound when playing live.
