Lyrics
Here he comes now...
The fast fingers, the expert eyes
And the same old 'how'd you do'
Disgust is just his dumb disguise
He wants a word with you
His problems are the end
His mouth needs exercise
The last thing I need is another friend
I don't want to be nice
I don't want to be nice
I think it's clever to swear
Better seek some sound advice
Better look elsewhere
Your face is an obvious case
You shouldn't put it about
This is neither the time nor place
To sort these matters out
What you see is what you get
You only live twice
A friend in need is a friend in debt
I don't want to be nice
No we never met before
I'm very happy to say
Far from perfect strangers
I'd like to keep it that way
I'm not your psychoanalyst
I'd rather talk to mice
You're so easy to resist
I don't want to be nice
I don't want to be nice
I think it's clever to swear
Better seek some sound advice
Better look elsewhere
Your face is an obvious case
You shouldn't put it about
This is neither the time nor place
To sort these matters out
What you see is what you get
You only live twice
A friend in need is a friend in dept
I don't want to be nice

I love John Cooper Clarke. I bought tickets for 6 to see him in Boston USA. I got a message that his visa was having some bullshiiite difficulty. I hope it gets reschuled. This happened once before when he was scheduled to appear at the Linwood Grille in Boston about 8 years back. I'd won tickets to see the show on college radio. (all respect to Sarah's 'Gorilla Got Me' show). I got a call shortly before the show saying that it got cancellec. FREE JOHN COOPER CLARKE for chrissakes.

The John Cooper Clarke of the BEHS!!
1st guy I ever saw on a stage. I was at my 1st gig, Siouxsie and the Banshees in Cardiff. I was a 14 year old punk with a green mohican (mohawk for all you in the U.S,) right down the front leaning on the chest high stage and this bloke comes on. I expected him to introduce the support band but he starts reeling out poetry, I thought "what the fuck?" but within 20 seconds I was a fan and have loved his stuff ever since. A damn fine introduction to gigs and the world of punk poetry. Shit!! I just realised how long ago that was. Today the doctor told me I have a shadow on both my lungs. I wonder if I got cliff Richard on one of my kidneys. This gettin old shit is a bit of a twat init. Never mind, I'm looking forward to using the best excuse in the world. My mates grandfather was found pissing in a phone box by two pigs. He looked at them and said "Fuck off I'm old" Brilliant! What could they say? "No you're not" I can't wait to use that one. Still a few years yet. Then again I might not get there. That will be a disappointment.

For those of you new to John... The bass player is legendary producer to Joy Division, Happy Mondays and many others. He's responsible for mating John's lyrics to music perfect for it. Martin is legendary among the "Manchester Sound" musicians for good reason, but IMO his 2 1/2 albums he did with JCC are some of the best rock ever made. Numerous famous musicians from that era played with the Invisible Girls which was really the name for Martins fluid band, Bill Nelson, members of the Buzzcocks. Pianist Steve Hopkins had a PhD in experimental Physics and even more impressive to me was a plumber. I'm a fan since the early 80s maybe the 70s. John Cooper Clarke - Vocals, Martin Hannett - Bass Guitar. Steve Hopkins - Piano. Paul Burgess - Drums. ----- If you'd like great poetry mated to rock music try: Jim Carroll "Catholic Boy"

I understand now why I love Sleaford Mods so much.
I saw him live about this time. One of the best gigs I ever went to and I am a jazz fan. His words are always easy to listen to, unlike many today. Still going strong.
