It's hard to fathom that John Coltrane's recorded output as a leader spans only about a decade, during which time he was transcendent. Words cannot adequately describe Trane's impact which continues to to be felt more than five decades after his passing. Every jazz musician since treads with reverence in his giant footsteps. This video is part one of a two-part tribute to a true giant.
ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course in jazz history. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s. I'm doing my small part.
My God, that Monk-Coltrane live cut... never heard it. And for anyone who ever questioned Monk's personal virtuosity or command over his instrument... ASTOUNDING. Coltrane's presence certainly didn't hurt !!

Jazz neophyte here. Enough so, that I KNOW I'll never Hear all the great jazz from that classic era(to me, like 1949-1967, all due respect Louis) anyway, your documentaries are like looking forward to the next Blue Note release from that era. Par excellence. I'm ashamed at my age I don't know how to making a short doc But your mini docs are perfectly chosen elements and stages to these lives. Coupled with the choice graphics, they are a joy to absorb. Thank you.

Honestly in terms of most studied sax players it's neck and neck either bird or trane for number one. Third would arguably be Wayne shorter. How about it Chase. Do you plan on covering Wayne?

These videos were originally done for a university course that had to go online during Covid. The course only extended through the end of the 1960s, so Wayne is covered only in the context of Miles' quintet, and a bit in the Art Blakey episode.

Evan Parker is light years ahead of any sax player, Coltrane is the second best= ahead of the rest by a great margin.
