John Cena On Why He Didn't Put Nexus Over At WWE SummerSlam 2010

Спорт

John Cena discusses not putting over The Nexus at SummerSlam 2010. The Nexus, who were red hot at the time, were defeated by Team WWE in an elimination match at the event. Cena was the sole survivor, eliminating Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett by pinfall and submission, respectively.

    Wade Barrett actually said vince wanted the nexus to win and then the plan was changed because vince wanted the kids to go home happy (seeing John win) but chris jericho and edge told john cena let the nexus go over and john said it wasnt a good idea after the match john told them he regretted it and i think john is lying then and now.

    no Cena has the idea of having him get a DDT on the concrete floor and get back up, not winning the match. Yeah he had a error with that but the decision of losing didn´t come from Cena, it came from Vince.

    WWE needed this so bad too. Batista had just quit, HBK retired, Undertaker and Triple H started working reduced schedules, Jericho was about to take a hiatus. Edge retired less than a year later. Cena and Orton were literally the only main event guys. Kane, Punk Big Show and Mysterio were good mid carders at the time and Punk would eventually go on to become a huge draw, but hell if you look at how stacked the roster was in 2008 and compare it 2012... Cena’s backstage influence doesn’t get talked about enough. Thankfully he would eventually put over Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and AJ Styles before becoming a part timer but still, if he’d of played ball, the shit probably wouldn’t have been so bland between 2010-2014. Thank god Daniel Bryan wasn’t on the losing side that night.

    So in other words his ego saw another opportunity to be the great hero by being the winner of the match against the new faction that had been running over everyone else, that and he couldn't handle fans were talking more about Nexus than him. Who was he hanging around with at the time in his spare time Hogan, Shawn and Hunter?

  • @linkbetweenwayne
    @linkbetweenwayne4 жыл бұрын

    This match happened almost 10 years ago and everyone hates on it because of the finish. I’m not hating on the Nexus, but a lot of the guys in that group did almost nothing. Barrett only got as far the Intercontinental title (he held it 5 times), Slater won tag team titles 4 times and won the 24/7 title, Gabriel won the tag titles with Slater then became a dancing a Bunny Rabbit, Ryback only had the Intercontinental Title once, nobody even knows about Tarver anymore, Otunga won the tag titles twice in two completely forgettable reigns, and Darren Young only had the tag titles once with Titus O Neill in a forgettable run overshadowed by The New Day. Everyone will probably say “this is all Cena’s fault, he buried the entire Nexus” he didn’t bury them. He put them over multiple times for months. He took a lot of losses in 2010 because of Nexus. They just did not have the “it” factor. The only ones who maybe could’ve been WWE Champion successfully are Barrett and Ryback. The rest are jobber level wrestlers or mid carders at best. If Cena truly had creative input on everything, he’d never lose a match. Look at his track record at Summerslam specifically. Cena’s only won 5 times, but he’s lost 9 times which includes him having a 6 year losing streak at this event from 2011 to 2016. Cena will put guys over, but the reality is if Vince doesn’t believe in them why is he going to have them win over the face of the company at a big PPV like Summerslam? Why doesn’t anyone talk about how well this match elevated Daniel Bryan’s career? He was rehired to work at this a PPV and a month later he was United States Champion and then we all know he went on to win the World Heavyweight Championship, the tag titles with Kane, then the WWE Championship 3 times (including his main event victory at WrestleMania 30), followed by an Intercontinental Title reign cut short due to injury, he retired and then fought back to get back in the ring. He won the WWE Title again and then won the SmackDown Tag Titles with Rowan. Bryan had the “it” factor and WWE knew it. He was pushed heavily in this match. Cena barely even fought in this match. He only fought maybe the last ten minutes or so. Cena took a back seat for the majority of this match and Daniel Bryan carried the team. To say that Cena “buried” the Nexus is ridiculous. You can’t push a whole 7 man faction, they didn’t even have enough championships to go around for all these guys. Sorry if you “hardcore WWE fans” are hurt by a nearly 10 year old match, but the reality is the match is over and the end result can’t be changed.

Basically he’s saying he genuinely thought in the moment that him winning was the right call but he thought the story was heading in a different direction than it did. In retrospect seeing how the story did play out he outright admitted it was the wrong decision. It has nothing to do with his influence or anything like that because he didn’t see any reason to even try and fight the decision because he agreed with it at the time

    In hindsight I hate to admit it but I think Vince/Cena was right to bury Nexus. I was a HUGE fan of Barrett especially, so I was mad about this for ages. But I think business-wise it was more important for WWE to not push Nexus so hard because Barrett wasn't cut out to be a top guy. He was a fantastic talker but unfortunately he was injury prone, and that time it was really early on for him. If they had committed to Wade as a long term main eventer he would have constantly been out. I'm not saying he's bad, I'm saying that it was a safer option to keep him around the midcard. Also, nobody from that current iteration of Nexus really got that far. Ryback did as well as he did even with that huge push later on, Darren was a tag guy, Heath a job guy with something here and there. Miz's push has worked out better because although he's not a top guy, he's been consistent and trustworthy to slot in as a recurring mid-high card heel. Also with The Rock returning into WM season then, the company benefitted more from concentrating more on him as the big deal to work with Cena and other top acts over the next couple of years. Also, Punk caught fire too. If Nexus and Wade had been super hot it may have impacted those plans. Just my thoughts, I love Wade and I'm happy he had a good run and he's back on commentary but yeah I was super mad at the time.

    I saw a Wade Barret live Q&A and he said that an agent (says he forgot who) told him at least a week before show Nexus was going over. The day of the show he was at ringside talking to Edge and Jericho who said said to Wade "we're trying to figure out how to make you guys look great tonight". He then spoke with Arn Anderson who said that Cena will be winning, then held his hands up and said don't be upset with me talk to Vince, which he did. Vince said that he thought Cena shld win bc he wanted Summerslam to have a happy ending. Wade said he felt like he was being lied to then, and still doesn't believe it. Sounds like the "Hogan must pose" type of answer lol. I'm sure Cena had some sort of creative control bc I've heard him admit that it was his idea to take the DDT on the floor and still come back to win. Then, in this video he says he was wrong. You know it was his idea to go over the whole time!!

    What Edge and Jericho said on the podcast doesn't necessarily contradict John's answer here. Remember John said that he had no control over the outcome, but that he had control over what happened during the match. Obviously, he was referring to the in-match buildup to the outcome - the spots and the storytelling. Jericho even pointed that out specifically, saying that it was dumb for John to get DDT'd outside the ring only to eliminate both Gabriel and Barrett. That's what Cena admits he was wrong about. I love how people just assume that Cena went to Vince (the same man that ruled over Rock, Austin, HBK, Hart, Hogan, etc...) and just said, 'Yeah, Vince, I just want to win this huge match and change the supposed story for the hell of it'. This man with this amazing ability to change plans just decided to not use it at other times; like winning the WWE Title at WrestleMania 27, beating CM Punk at SummerSlam 2011, not getting punk'd by The Rock every time they matched up. Yeah, he just used this incredible power on this one instance, then just decided to never use it again. I still don't care, it was a better option for Cena to win this match; The Nexus storyline was a crap shoot to begin with, and was the absolute wrong way to try to get over 7 SuperStars to begin with, just look where they are now, heck the only two left in the WWE are the non-wrestling David Otunga and Heath Slater (who's probably next on the chopping block).

    That's because of the reasoning. The reasoning behind letting Cena win at Summerslam was to let all kids go home happy. At Wrestlemania 27 Cena knew he would get the title later anyway and it was to build up his program with The Rock. He lost to Punk because even his influence couldn't change how much money WWE made through the CM Punk storyline. Punk's merch was like sold out at every arena and it went out of stock online during that time multiple times. If you think it was crap letting Nexus get over you are mistaken. The last faction that entered like that and wasn't destroyed was the Shield and look how that turned out. Every other stable was ruined early on.

  • @Pudward69

    @Pudward69

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@JSmellerM Punk winning at SummerSlam did nothing, as Del Rio cashed in. Nash could've attacked during match. All the Cena loses to Punk matches did was help make a February 2013 match bigger as Cena finally won. The Shield was different, a 3-person team that were made out as brothers in arms, but did get beaten down a lot, just didn't lose as a team. Difference, they weren't pushed as the main event, if Nexus had basically beaten WWE at SummerSlam, then Barrett would've had to win WWE Title at Night of Champions. Nexus were the storyline, Shield was mid-card, and helped with CM Punk, but were fully mid-card in 2013, slowly built up. Nexus was pushed to the top way to fast. Even had they won, they collapsed soon, with injuries and numerous loses, which would've made WWE look even worse had they lost at Slam.

John was the face of the company and had spent the past eight years working his ass off to get himself there. On the other hand, you have the Nexus, none of whom had ever wrestled A SINGLE WWE PPV MATCH before MAIN EVENTING A BIG FOUR PAY-PER-VIEW. As I've aged, I appreciate the workhorse that he was, I understand completely why he put so few people over in his prime similar to Austin triple h hogan, when you're on top of the company like that, you have the right to be the top as long as you can. I totally understand while a lot of other people don't. But he absolutely positively 100% made a mistake not putting them over. I really wish he would admit it. People crap all over triple h for his supposed run of terror bearing people but again at the time he was carrying the company on his back because how many people left? I completely support him getting that one huge run. But he still put people over he just didn't put over people that everyone wanted him to. The only person that I think he should have put over during that time that he didn't, was Booker t. I don't think Rob Van dam was ready yet, I don't think that Kane needed it especially with the direction they were going, Kevin Nash didn't need to go over, Scott Steiner I would have liked to see go over but he was just not good when he came to wwe. Is over with is done with none of those Nexus guys was going to be huge Superstars anyway and Wade Barrett could have been a major Superstar if he wouldn't have got hurt a lot.

    They were kids on this interview so that's why he was like not straight to the point on the answer because he does not want to tell the kids that they're matches are planned on who wins and who loses.

    Wow John boy, you would make an exceptional politician, did anyone ever tell you that? Way to give an answer that is 50% nothing and 50% contraddicting statements....seriously, one moment you are just the guy that does what he's told and then you're the guy that was wrong? Wrong about what? Didn't you say you had no power over the decision? And awesome way to be overly defensive with that "I was wrong ONCE". Great stuff mister nice guy....

    Cena never gave a direct answer to the question. Also him saying 1:30 " I cant change the television show. I dont have that power I never have and that's just not something I do ". Thats bullshit. Also for him to say "I guessed wrong" show in it self that he actually did have a say in who was going to win. He was being his selfish self in not putting the Nexus over.

    How could he have been "wrong once" about a story when he just got done with an explanation about how he doesn't have the power to change it? Sounds like some bullshit to me...

    I lost all respect for him as a backstage figure when he refused to put The Nexus over at SummerSlam 2010.I'd lose respect for him as a wrestler 7 years later,when he buried Baron Corbin,and only regained it 2 weeks ago.

    Cena is a walking example of everyone's "what if?". What if you also had to scrape and crawl to find success like he did. What if, like him, you were lucky and got that success... would you do the right thing, given the chance or would you just keep taking from less fortunate people to continue to widen the gap between your success and theirs?

    Bury a whole faction, just another thing for John cena to overcome. John went to vince and said I'm winning this. So many great wrestlers never given a chance just consigned to be jobbers or the indies.

    I’m one of the biggest John cena fans aways have been for people saying John had weight sure but it’s been said from cm punk podcast that John has tried to change stuff he thought was dumb and Vince has stayed to his word of what he wanted that day so my guess is it was Vince that said the nexus had to lose because in 2010 was a big year for cena and him saleing merchandise at the end of the day Vince only likes money sadly I’d be down for them to go over it made sense

    John Cena can spin his version as many times and as much as he wants to and it still won't be true because the real truth was because he didn't like the idea of someone outshining him to the point where they get hand out title shots like he does. Now he seems to be losing his grip on what he has had comfortably for less than 2 decades now because you can't holding that that many people down forever.
