John-Andrew Morrison Sings 'Periodically' From A Strange Loop
Ойын-сауық
Michael R. Jackson's A Strange Loop explores the thoughts of Usher, a Black, queer writer working a job he hates while writing his original musical: a piece about a Black, queer composer working a job he hates while writing his original musical.
Composer Michael R. Jackson shares with Playbill how his musical went from a personal monologue to a full production and now a concert at Joe’s Pub.

I think the fact that the lyrics are so sincere are what make them hit so hard. Parents who are like that often say they’re doing it out of love and you really feel the love here because it’s genuine. And so is the homophobia. That combination leads to tremendous guilt. If this song were the mom telling Usher “I hate you, you’re a POS, I never wanna see you again” it would be less devastating than this IMO

It is so much more powerful with usher in the scen as well. His devastation when he sings along to "I hope that your reprobate lifestyle/isn't real" tore me apart.

@@bmplovesprince agreed, this was the moment that really broke me in the show. So small and so tender, yet so powerful!
this song perfectly encapsulates the kind of long-winded voicemail a well meaning family member would send. full of love before slipping the knife between your ribs in a way they can't even see.
The way this monologue/song (songologue?) makes you feel the conflicting sense of love and rejection the protagonist feels from his mother is amazing. This is the kind of complex lyric writing you'd expect from Sondheim! Can't WAIT to see this.
john-andrew morrison totally kills this. heart-breaking and gorgeous. so well written, too.
This song is a full journey by itself. The arc of it is extraordinary. And John-Andrew Morrison delivers masterfully. So moving!
This song is one gorgeous punch in the gut.
Just heard this song for the first time when I saw, "A Strange Loop," yesterday. The ;progression from just love to love mixed with a lot of other complex emotions and not-so-pretty perceptions is masterfully done. I was fortunate enough to be able to see and take a selfie with the playwright and lyricist Michael R. Jackson outside of the Lyceum Theater yesterday. He was just hanging back by himself, taking in the enthusiasm of the exiting audience.
His performance here and on the album is INCREDIBLE
This musical is AMAZING and deserves all the credit and fame. I’m smashing my piggy bank and flying out to wherever it ends up next.

Same here!
This is so crushing. How many of us have had this exact same phone call? You know she honestly believes her baby is going to hell and this is the best way she can try to save him, all while absolutely devastating him. All the earlier love that comes through with the story of how you're born...along with her pleading that he repent not just for her, but for his soul. I fucking hated having to go through that. And they bring up how much it hurts THEM that their baby is going to hell, not understanding what you're going through yourself. Utterly devastating and beautifully captured here.
John-Andrew is incredible! Incredible portrayal. Also....this song? 😭😍
I adore this musical. I love how all the other actors are playing thoughts in Usher's head and portray memories. There's something about this song that hits hard even more knowing this.
John-Andrew Morrison is brilliant!
I really hope that he wins the Tony award. He deserves it for this song alone
This song is truly amazing, I nearly cried listening to it. The simultaneous sense of love and rejection coming from Usher's mom is a testament to how religious parents are in real life. Shee loves him out of obligation but hates who he has become and is urging him to change. It's brilliant writing.

Also, it really does sound like a voicemail from a parent. Especially the way she completely changes the subject on a whim.
The shift in message from love to homophobia is so sad. Remembering it after listening it becomes even more powerful
“So you could see Jesus.” Followed by the cheering with hands lifted hits me in a way I can’t express. It’s just so beautiful.
JAM breaks my heart in this! He is so amazing!!!
This hits really close to home for me. I have a mom who loves me so much and yet her homophobia and transphobia keep pushing me away from her. I don't know how to be close with her when I know she hates who I am. I cry every time I hear this song. Much love to MRJ, this show, and Mr. Morrison's performance of it.
THIS IS AMAZING!
Just so beautiful
Wow what an incredible performance. What a joy to have such an intimate recording of this!
Aaaaaaaaaand Tony Award
Hoping he gets a Tony nom. This is such an amazing performance

Wow.
my husband called this song a "Trauma-Bop". and he was correct
This is kinda weird for me to watch because my birthday is actually on the 26th!! Aside from that, this is a Masterclass from John Andrew Morrison, who really should have won the Tony!
Doyle needs to hand over that Tony. Makes zero sense.
The Book Of Mormon on steroids, me thinks.

Not even close. Sounds like someone didn’t make it to the end of the song but decided to go ahead and label it anyway.
