John Adams is a U.S. composer who, along with Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley, is one of the best-known exponents of minimal music (a musical style built on repetitive harmonic and/or rhythmic patterns). Already as a child, Adams enjoyed a musical education and studied at Harvard
University. In addition to his studies, he gains a lot of practical musical experience at an early age. In 1985 he collaborates with Alice Goodman (lyricist) and Peter Sellars (director) on two operas, including "Nixon in China": a success and at the same time a controversial opera. While working on this great work, he creates a kind of by-product: "Chairman Dances - foxtrot for orchestra".

Absolutely wonderful performance. I was spellbound by the hypnotic rhythm that John Adams is such a master at. I bet the guys in the percussion section had a blast doing this piece.

as a percussionist who played this in the VA all-state orchestra this year, it was so much fun!! Definitely one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever gotten the opportunity of performing
This piece is so mesmerizing... The ending is like waking up from a dream. SUPERB performance.

Having tried to follow the orchestral score of this piece - and failed miserably - I am absolutely in awe of the conductor and musicians of the orchestra. Not only is their timing impeccable, but they bring out the emotional content of the music to perfection. Lovely performance, many thanks to all involved in creating this video.

Brillante interprétation, du dynamisme et une sonorité très nette par rapport à d'autres orchestres, la cheffe Alondra de la Parra y est peut-être pour quelque chose ? L'orchestre est simplement remarquable dans l'exécution de cette oeuvre que j'écoute régulièrement. Bravo ! Brillante Interpretation, Dynamik und ein im Vergleich zu anderen Orchestern sehr klarer Klang, vielleicht hat Dirigentin Alondra de la Parra etwas damit zu tun? Das Orchester ist einfach bemerkenswert in der Ausführung dieses Werkes, das ich regelmäßig höre. Jubeln ! Brillante interpretación, dinamismo y un sonido muy claro en comparación con otras orquestas, ¿tendrá algo que ver la directora Alondra de la Parra? La orquesta es sencillamente notable en la ejecución de esta obra que escucho asiduamente. Alegría !

Alondra is a great conductor with all the emotions displayed on her face. I saw her conduct the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Australia many years ago

There were some young people doing some movements in the back between 2:00 - 3:30 or 5:35 - 6:30 marks. I noticed some other quasi-performances in other videos of the WDR performances as well. Was that a common part of the performances at the Kölner Philharmonie?

Hi, Giao! The concert was part of one of the music education concert series and was aimed in particular at children and young people from the age of 13 and school classes. In the background, you can see a dance performance that a group of students created.

They are dancers. This piece was performed in the concert "WDR@Philharmonie: Rythm & Dance", so the dancers are part of the performance. ;)

That would be Mao Zedong also known as "Chairman Mao"

This is from the John Adams' opera Nixon in China. Chairman stands for Chairman Mao.

Wonderful performance, spot on. I've just discovered Alondra de la Parra, a young master. But I could do without the distracting idiot chorus of dancing drunks over the orchestra. Why?
